Elderly cat breathing difficulties when purring

Lula recently died of a fox attack, and since then it seems very lonely down the chicken house even though there are 4 there Lula really gave it life with her weird ways.

ANYWAY the point is I thought it would be nice to get another chick to fill the empty space. Its more returning to normal and not brooding on whats been rather than trying to replace her.

 

 

Sooo I dont know what chicken to get. I would like a layer, but it doesnt matter if it doesnt lay as many. I dont want a bantam, and I would prefer it to be friendly. It dounds weird but we have a kind of 'colour scheme' so we dont want a chicken that is brown, black, grey or buff. I just realised how awkward these requirements are

 

 

Sooo the only ones ive seen so far that I like are heritage skyline, cream legbar and amber (amber star??). Does anyone have one of these chicks who has pictures or who can give me some info on them? Thanks!

Light Sussex are white with black-ish tails - they are supposed to be friendly aswell.

I've recently got 2 amber stars and they're really cheeky. You can see their piccies in my gallery. They are Edna and Pearl.

I wouldn't introduce 1 chicken to 4 others though as it'll have no chance of defending itself against 4 pecky girls! At least get 2 and introduce them really slowly.

I've also got a light sussex called Lily, and 2 skylines called Daisy and Doris. The ambers are definitely the most characterful though.

I have a cream legbar, and she is absolutely beautiful to look at, with the added bonus of blue eggs, but she is very flighty and couldn't be described as friendly. I agree with moochoo that it would be better to introduce 2 to your flock rather than a lone hen.

I have two Merrydale Cresteds (like skylines), one lays green eggs and one blue - they are supposed to be rather flighty....one of mine is friendly and the other won't let me get within a mile of her!!

 

I agree with others that you shouldn't introduce one to four if possible!

I have an Amber Star and a Cream Legbar pictures below. There are others of them and the rest of my little flock in the link on my signature.

 

This is Evadne who is a bit older than this now (more of a comb and has grown plus she now has much more yellow legs) - she hasn't layed yet as she is still a bit young and its winter. I think she is quite dark in colour compared to other Cream Legbars if have seen.

 

This is Blanche who is a real character and lays lovely creamy coloured eggs most days. She is much tamer than Evadne.

I agree with what everyone is saying about not introducing just one hen to an established flock.

 

I have 4 Fenton Blues which are a type very similar to the cream legbar. One (Quidditch) is the friendliest hen in the world, the others are very flighty and difficult to catch....although they are OK about being held once caught.

 

I also have an Amber Link, which is very similar to the Amber Star. She is very friendly.

I reckon you couldn't go far wrong with an Amber Star - mine is fantastic, really friendly and entertaining. What about a white star as well? They do nice white eggs!

sorry, should have mentioned that we were already planning on getting a pekin bantam to add it aswell

 

i love the look of skylines, but in the description i found on the internet it says something about them going up trees at night to roost? are they actually this flighty? or flighty in the way bantams are flighty? Are they not very friendly?

 

i like cream legbars but probably only more lighter coloured ones...although thanks helen for posting those pics, it is dammed near impossible to find ones on the internet
