ouch! old wives remedies needed!

Recommended Posts

I was struck with the dreaded flu bug last week. I had a good 4-5 days of fever and everything hurting. Even my teeth hurt!!!

Any way I am on the mend and now have a very runny nose and a hacking cough, especially every time I try to go to sleep

However the main thing that is absolutely bugging me is I have a great big cold sore in my nose. And everytime I wipe my nose I knock off the scabby bits (sorry if you are having your supper!) and make it bleed. It hurts like HELL and I cant seem to get it to heal because of the constant wiping. I am putting cold sore cream on with a cotton bud and have tried putting Sudocream on at night to give a barrier. It really really hurts and I am starting to get in a state every time I need to wipe my nose. Any great ideas???? :(

Ouch! Poor you! I get cold sores on my nose - less unsightly than on the lip so I suppose it is some comfort, but they are bloomin' painful! Make sure you are using the acyclovir cold sore cream - it does speed up the healing. May be worth using a barrier cream over the top to protect it, like vaseline. Use the softest tissues that you can find - might be worth finding old fashioned cotton hankies, and dab, don't rub! Plenty of fluids and a steam inhalation with olbas oil or eucalyptus oil will help ese any stuffiness and make the cough easier. Hope you fell better soon! Oh yes, and keep taking the paracetamol or ibuprofen, that will help with the pain and the inflammation.

I have a diet that I firmly believe in, and if you google it you will find some back up to what I say. Coldsores need Arginine to grow. Lysine (as I understand it) mops up the arginine starving the cold sore. It should become less painful and start to heal quite quickly.

Simply put. Arginine is in nuts, including coconut, some grains and pulses.

Lysine is in fish, poultry, pork (all meat probably) milk and yoghurt.

Go and eat a tin of tuna straight away. Have a glass of skimmed milk.

In reality protein foods generally contain both Lysine and Arginine, so it is the ratio of these that makes the difference.

Do google around to find a comprehensive list of foods to eat and not eat. (only when you are getting a coldsore, too restrictive otherwise). Lysine can be bought in tablet form in Holland and Barrat (for example) I prefer the 500 mg tablets.

Hope this helps. Get well soon x

A dab of eau de cologne {sp} works a treat!, hurts a bit, but really drys up the scabby bits :D . The smell is so strong you forget sinus problems!!. You might get a headache from the smell, but what the heck, its better than a cold sore :D:D:D

My grandad always swore by this! He'd do it for you too  and yes it stings like mad!!

Poor you  ! Glad you are on the mend though. It's been a rotten season for bugs hasn't it.

A friend of mine swears by bee propolis (sp?) dabbed on cold sores. Apparently it hurts to start with, but then doesn't everything which is supposed to do us good  , but is wonderful stuff. I think it's the bee equivalent of disinfectant/antiseptic, so full of lots of lovely bee magic! You can get it in health food shops. It's dark brown & thickish like molasses, so not terribly attractive, but if it's up your nozzle, maybe it wouldn't be so obvious?! Could also be kept for home and night-time use, when it would do most good anyway.

Hope it clears soon,

I think I'd have to relegate one of my kingsized sheets as recycled hankies if I went the cotton hanky route!

Actually, maybe then I wouldn't have my pup (she's 15 months old!!!) shredding whole boxes of very expensive softest you can buy tissues like she did yesterday....! Daddy came upstairs making "that dog needs to be rehomed!" noises (it wasn't just the tissues she'd shredded, DS's Lamy pen and various other items which had been left on the table :x ) - I reinstated her cage & peace has been resumed!
