LJ's Chooks
Hello chicken'o'holics.... anybody know if chickens are ok with pine nuts and pumpkin seeds... i over ordered when my toddler had a fad and now that has passed, i have cupboards of the things.... there are only so many a girl can eat and they are not very weight watchers friendly.... BTW... glad to be back on the forum, i missed you and my girls still have no bum feathers but they are now tollerating each other.... Happy new year everyone.... chelsea
mine have had pumpkin seeds in the past (when we were carving pumpkins for halloween). I've never tried pine nuts tbh. Mine do have sesame seeds and sunflower seeds in small quantities as afternoon treats and they like them. Lots of seeds can be fattening though I believe, so you'll probably have a long supply! Saronne
Pine Nuts! My hens would have to fight me for those. They're so expensive! Why not buy some basil, etc. and make pesto out of them instead? I'll pass on my recipe if you like Saronne x Paris Nicole Dorothy Germaine Jordan

Saronne
Hi LJ, Here's one I got from the BBC Goodfood website: Pesto An easy homemade versatile sauce that goes with pretty much anything. Ingredients 50g/2oz basil 30g/1oz pine nuts, toasted 30g/1oz parmesan cheese, freshly grated 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed 85ml/3fl oz olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method 1. Put the basil, parmesan, garlic and pine nuts into a food processor and season well. 2. Whiz together and with the motor still running, pour the oil in until the pesto thickens. 3. Store in a clean jar in the fridge covered with a slick of oil to prevent it drying out. Enjoy, LJ ! Saronne x

Faye&Ant
My girls go mad for pine nuts and basil! I was advised on this forum to only give pine nuts as an occasional treat so maybe dont go overboard with them?
cordelia
mine like them and also roasted butternut squash seeds, they are so nice (and undoubtedly very fattening), that you'll fight the chickens for them...
The Dogmother
I occasionally give mine some Omega seeds, pumpkin, sunflower and linseeds, but am careful as I understand that they can easily eat too many linseeds. The omeag oils in them help to keep the hens healthy and in fine fettle, plus the goodness is passed on to the eggs.
helenmb
I seem to remember reading somewhere that anything with a very high fat content like seeds and nuts are not very good for the girls. But in light of the cold weather a bit of extra carbs might not do any harm, everything in moderation. We love Pine Nuts ourselves but being a strict veggie I use them as a protein source and sprinkle them toasted onto pasta or make Pesto when I can find cheap basil on sale.
