Hi there

My husband really wants frizzle hens! (To add to our ever growing flock!)

We have a nice large enclosure at the top of the garden for a lot more hens but it is always 'open air' ie- no roof! There is shelter underneath the coop which is on stilts and under the 8 large conifers along oneside of the run but I am worried about how a frizzle would cope through any really wet weather. (like we had last year!) I have read that they don't like wet weather and that they are unsuitable for open runs like mine.

 

Does anyone here have any or have any experience with them? Is it a no-go or is there a chance I could suprise him with some???

Hi - well I have Spongebob the red frizzle cockerel & Button the black frizzle chick (nearly 6 weeks old). Spongebob is very well feathered up over the winter & snuggles up to his ladies at night. He is very happy & hardy. If it pours down, he gets soaked - all my chickens do..they amaze us, that they still want to free range in the rain, wind or snow. The frizzle feathers seem more luxurious the next day when he has dried out.

I would not worry at all.

Some people in November had some eggs off me & had great success with them. I proud that the frizzle gene was passed on, as it can't always be guarateed. They usually say there is a 50% chance. That is exactly what I got. Somebody else hatched 5 out of 6 & seems to have 2 frizzles!

Frizzle bantams are so cute - you will love them!

Whereabouts are you?

 

There is a breeder of pure frizzles and frizzle pekins near to me in Suffolk.

She has the pure frizzles at the moment but you would have to wait until March for the pekins.

I want to get 2 bantams I think... Not sure about a cockrel though - are they as loud as 'big' birds?!?

 

All my hens don't mind the rain - even the fluffy pekin!

 

I am in Derbyshire - not sure how far that is to suffolk???

 

What should I expect to pay for a frizzle bantam?

I think that the lady by us charges £1 for every week old the bird is, if you get my drift?

A fifteen week old bird would be £15.

Hi,

 

I have 2 12 week old frizzles, which I bought for £15 each when they were 8 weeks old. I have been keeping them under cover in an outhouse during this cold weather, as they were very small when I got them, and am planning on putting them outside in their eglu once the weather improves, so can't help on the question of them getting wet I'm afraid. They are lovely little characters and I would love to get a couple more, but sadly Suffolk is just too far away - anyone know of any breeders in the North West?

I have a fizzle at the momet! She is a stuborn little thing as she keeps going broody and wont snap out of it!

But the weather side of things shes fine (alot better than the silkies!) Shes happy to stay in the rain and makes no effort to find shelter like he rest! Shes not the best flyer in the world either!

The best thing about her is her personality!

I was actually thinking of getting a silkie too, so I am glad you have swayed the decision!

We have 4 ex batts which lay really well still, it was just for pure 'looks' that we wanted a frizzle! I know that sounds a bit shallow, but hopefully you will understand what I mean!

There was a really cute bantam frizzle in this months ! Are yours full size or banatms?

I used to work there and they only had a few frizzles, but I went back a few weeks ago and they had a pen full of them, which a few could be for sale.

They also have silkies for sale and aren't too far from Derbyshire.

I've been going since I was a baby and still love going there!

It seemed strange to work there, and now it's even stranger to go back and recognise all the animals.

 

That's the place where I first got my chickens from and they were really nice, and they're handled from a few hours old and are used to all the human contact and attention. Babs was the best chicken I've had and have ever seen, she used to think she was a dog and craved human attention .

The garden just doesn't seem right without her, still look out sometimes and expect to hear her or see her hurtling towards you.

I kept some of her feathers from wen she moulted, and her pink leg ring - sad but nice.
