Ash
Lost a chick the other day for the first time. A cat had snuck in the run during the day and it didnt get spotted on lock down. Sadly it attacked and killed the boss (top of pecking order) chicken. I can only assume the boss chicken tried to protect the others. The cat was still in the run in the morning hiding in the house. It wont be coming back. Moral is, as the weathers cold cats (and other animals) might take a fancy to the snug warm houses so check everything thoroughly at lock down so you dont fall victim to feline killers. The other chickens were a little shaken and unsure what to do as no-one was clucking commands at them but they are getting over it now. Guest
ahhhhh, poor little girl best make a thorough check on 'lock down' in future, just in case. How do you know the cat won't back?
Ash
I gave it good reason not to come back.

jill the potter
Sorry to hear the sad news, but thank's for the warning to us all. I myself noticed a neighbours cat snooping around inside the eglu run yesterday, it hadn't occured to me that one could possibly be in there when the chooks go to bed!!! Will check through egg port every evening from now on!!!

helenmb
Good point, but a sad end to your post, I'm very sorry about your loss. We have a (beautiful) huge tom cat that comes into our garden that the girls really hate (they make a huge fuss if they see him), they are totally 'non-pussed' by our lovely little kitty, she is probably smaller than our bigger girls. I have to admit I thought non-banties were safe with cats so will be extra vigilent now.
