JM
I've just Flubenvetted the girls (well they are half way through) - and when I emptied the poo tray yesterday, there were a few worms - quite long curly ones! (YUK!). It looks like only one of the girls had them though because there weren't masses. I had wormed them at the start of September, so they've picked them up since then. So a few questions (I've just realised that I have no idea of worm lifecycles!!) - 1. Do I need to do a complete change of the Aubiose in the run - presumably the pre-worming poo may have eggs in? 2. And when I do change it, is it OK to compost, or is that just spreading the worm eggs? 3. My dog loves chicken poo and despite my best efforts always manages to snaffle some I wormed him a few days before I wormed the chickens - so do chicken worms live in dogs? 4. I weighed out 3kg of food for the week to put the Flubenvet in, but they are almost through that already (2.5 days to go for the 7 day dosage). This obviously means that they are taking the dose quicker than expected. So will that affect the non-withdrawal of eggs, or doesn't it really matter? Questions, questions!! (and such a lovely topic too!) Thanks! Jill
Saronne
Fantastic questions, and just the sort I would like answers to! It would make sense to clean the bedding completely when you have finished worming, otherwise they could recontaminate themselves.. I believe that if composted correctly, the heat produced would kill the worms/eggs - however, this time of year, it is harder to bring composting temperatures up, e.g. in the summer, when you've put a load of freshly cut grass clippings or fresh chicken poo into your compost, the heat from its decomposition will kick start the rotting down of everything else in the pile. Much slower process in winter. I've often wondered whether my cats and hens shared worms ( I worm my cats, they have a litter tray indoors, but will also poo in the garden. ) Saronne Nicole Paris Dorothy Germaine Jordan
