Snowy Posted January 26, 2009 Share Posted January 26, 2009 I've just cut up 2 old towelling dressing gowns and turned them into an enormous pile of floorcloths, facecloths, wipes, you name it, we now have a wipe for it! So white or cream towelling with bright pink, turquoise or lilac binding around the edge & seam. Sha x Think you should make a tulle rose to pin on the side as well. Everyone was very impressed when I took them in this morning, may just make up a few more & wait to see if they get ordered too, maybe the children wearing them after their swimming lessons will prompt a flurry ! DD went to school with one (as did a friend) with a shop-bought one & came out of the pool at home-time wearing them. I was so impressed & knowing just how easy they are to make, I said in my usual fashion to a Mummy who passed comment, "I can make you one".....I've had 3 other orders too. Will take a piccy of DD modelling one if I remember in the morning. I ought to make her one too now, hers are looking a bit threadbare in comparison it has to be said!!! Best bit is I'm using the towels my sis donated to me months ago, (saying they were for the dogs, but they looked perfect ), so they are absorbent rather than brand new towelling where the water sits on the surface, and they are doubly recycled!! The binding is new though, I thought I owed the new owners that at least!! So white or cream towelling with bright pink, turquoise or lilac binding around the edge & seam. ems Posted February 1, 2009 Share Posted February 1, 2009 I really am not the type of person that would put her animals in clothes, but I was wondering if would be taking the whole chicken thing too far to make a couple of chicken fleeces for my new exbats for when I put them outside sometime next week They are both pretty featherless! I love sewing, I have three sewing machines, (my man thinks I collect them, but they all do diffent things, he will never understand!!!), and a dedicated room to do all my making Anyone any ideas? IKEA and Primark both do cheap fleece blankets if you need the fabric. It does sound hilarious making coats for animals, but it's freezing right now and if they don't have nature's bodywarmers, then they'll probably need the extra layer a coat affords. Chook n Boo Mum Posted February 1, 2009 Share Posted February 1, 2009 I have to admit I've just been outside to check all's quiet & collect the last water/food pots which I forgot to do when I closed their doors earlier , and was wondering whether my 4 little batties were going to be ok in their eglu tonight. I've covered the top with a picnic blanket & stuffed the poo try with as much straw as was reasonable to try & stop any draughts, but it's soo ooooo ooo cold out there. I'm almost praying for snow so it insulates them a bit!! I felt it would be a bit cruel, manhandling them into a fleece, but if this temperature continues I may have to go that route! I was just about to deny all ownership of a chicken outfit and then I remembered that the OH and I, high on cola and pick n mix, bought a pair of comedy chicken hats that look like whole chickens with beaks and feet - like electrocuted light sussexes in a 99p shop once in case they came in handy for visiting my parent. Right now they are in the house, but they cant stay in forever! We've got guests arriving on firday, so I guess they will have to go in the garage or go outside. OMG those fluffly chicken outfits!! Ive got alot of thick red fleece, sort of a wine colour, but there wsa this little nagging thing in my head reminding me of something someone told me... will they peck each other more if its red? Mine are out in the eglu, we were going to keep them inside for a few days, but they went absolutely bonkers after about an hour & I was terrified they would hurt themselves, so we covered the run with a triple layer of tarpaulin, coated the floor with a layer of hemcore & filled the base of the eglu with straw (bought from SPR on the way back from the rescue - DS stayed in the car with them as nursemaid , glad I grabbed another sack of mash too, they are certainly motoring through that, mind you I've gone from 3 to 11 mash-munchers since Friday, so not really a surprise!!!!). They are looking a bit bemused still, but at least they are here & will eventually get healthy & be allowed out to see what all the kerfuffle outside their run is all about - probably just as well they can't see 3 labs bombing around the garden Here's their home, it's now got a picnic blanket over the eglu and one over the gate at the end, by way of a porch to stop the weather blowing in, and a liberal layer of snow over everything..... And here they were yesterday morning in the eglu. It's amazing how warm it was in there, I opened it to encourage them out for some breakfast, which they all did after a bit of grumbing!! That would be lovely! Though I will have to confess I dont own an omlet house, as I'm paraplegic I needed something that would fit exactly over our raised beds so I could get to them easily, and I hadnt seen the omlet website till a few days ago, and didnt know anything about them, wish I had known now!! Would have been alot easier than putting together the the flat pack house!!! I've been churning our lawn all winter just getting to the bunnies, who although are enjoying their childs playhouse on decking at the back of the garden, I have to wheel over the lawn to get to their door, I've created a path of mud going out there every day! I thankfully have just got a new chair at the beginning of this month, so my last one is my garden chair, and my new one is my clean chair! I was thinking of putting our new jailbirds out pretty soon, they have been fighting all morning, and at last have settled down to some warm porridge The first bowl of it got thrwon around as they were having their tantrum, but the second bowl, they have both allowed each other to eat from. Mind you a liberal dose of red mite powder & they were much improved! Mine have taken quite well to warm mash porridge, yesterday they had some with sultanas & corn added & that disappeared too. I'm just doing them small portions of what my greedy guts have to see what they'll take & what they won't. I have 2 sets of chickens like that as I adopted 4 Orpingtons on Friday too & we are getting to know each other too! Have just hoiked a warm egg from the run - thank goodness we have velux windows in the roof of the new extension & DH has made a long-handled hook! The batties were unimpressed with it coming into their run, but hey it works!! What time did you pick up? we could easily have passed in the lane!! We should meet up once this snow has passed, I'm not that keen on the whole idea of travel at the mo, strangely enough!! And yes, "a garden full of hens" just about covers it now. I made a comment last night about getting one who lays coloured eggs - it was greeted with kind of expressions!! Have you decided on a colour for your batties coats yet? or are you just going to cover their run & hope for the best? Absolutely no chance of gettnig jumpes on them!! I was worried the chooks would hate me if I tried to dress them, I've only managed to put vaseline on one comb etc so far as I can't grab them quickly enough. I made the mistake of opening the eglu door before I embarked on that fun job, I was worried they pop out of the egg port if I didn't though!
