craftyhunnypie
Yesterday we went to a Sizzling pub. In January they are doing 2 meals for £5. Excellent value & a good serving. I had BBQ burger stack & chips, hubby & dad had gammon, mum had tipsy pie. http://www.sizzlingpubs.co.uk/ Go you'll enjoy it! Emma.x
Cooks
theres no pubs within a 20 miles radius of me, why does that not surprise me!
Lesley
Their food is award winning - but there's no mention of the provenance of the meat and poultry.......is that right? or have I missed it somewhere on their site. I suppose it would be a bit too much to ask for £5 though
Cooks
that's true!, I never thought of that as I was thinking veggie options...

MedusA
Might be worth a punt then. I like the sound of pesto veggie lasagne.

craftyhunnypie
You can go or not - it's your choice! But I just thought some people would like to know about it. The gammon came with pineapple not eggs! Emma.x
Guest
just thought anyone concerned about meat provenance might find this article interesting (could be upsetting to some), Jamie's going to be tackling the issue of intensively farmed pigs in The Great British Food Fight http://www.ciwf.org.uk/what_we_do/pigs/state_of_eu_pigs/default.aspx sorry to highjack your thread Emma but seems a good opportunity to raise the subject for those that may not be fully aware. alexgirl73
If there was one nearer me Emma, I'd be popping in lol. And yes, we would all like to eat ethically at all times, but tbh, most of us would never go out to eat then, or be able to afford anything but the basics at home. Things are changing slowly, which is great, but I don't want to be made to feel guilty every time I go for a MacD's, KFC or even a sizzling pub. I know all of you on here mean well when you post these things, but please remember that you do cause upset sometimes. It's not within everyones bank balance to be able to eat as we all would like. It's not within everyones bank balance to be able to eat as we all would like. hi, hope you don't mind me addressing some of the points you've raised. I know some people don't like to actually think about where their food comes from and I have to say, I was upset when I thought about how many people would be taking advantage of this cheap offer (knowing that the meat was probably intensively reared) but I wasn't going to say anything. Then I saw Lesley's post and agreed with what she was saying. She pm'd me wondering whether we should mention the eggs in the pasta so I said I would. I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do or what to eat, just merely posting information for people to make their own minds up. Not everyone realises pigs are as intensively farmed as chickens (I wasn't until someone told me and I'm glad they did) and once given the facts, they can make their own minds up. Personally speaking, if I can't afford to eat out then I don't eat out, rather than go for cheap meal deals. Our income isn't huge, far from it in fact, but we're careful with what we buy and subsidise it with some home grown fruit and veg (and home grown eggs of course ) so I don't agree about not being able to eat ethically on a budget because it is possible. Sorry if you're upset but both sides deserve to be heard.
Lesley
Sorry - I had to go or I would have been here to ask the question myself. I also think both sides deserve to be heard, perhaps not in this thread though so I'll leave it.
craftyhunnypie
I won't share my offers in future! The issue here was not where the meat comes from, but merely that you can go out for a good meal cheaply. Just because it is cheap, does not mean that the meat has come from anywhere different than the poshest restaurant in town or maybe not. Every pub will source its meat independently, depending on the managers views. It's up to you to phone the manager before you go if you are that concerned. Or phone anyway - the numbers are on the website for every pub! Emma.x
poachedegg
I won't share my offers in future! You (and anyone else) should feel absolutely free to share your offers; many probably find them useful. People have different ethics/opinions on food provenance, which is completely understandable, Obviously the topic is close to many people's hearts, however it isn't always necessary to evangelise (sp?) on a thread which was just trying to be helpful and informative. All you have done is kindly let people know of the offer, and like you say, anybody who wishes to know further the provenance of the food, can then carry out their own investigations. From what I have read, I have some differing principles to some on here, however that is absolutely their perogative (and mine), and wouldn't deem it necessary to make them aware of them at each opportunity. P&P
Thanks for mentioning the offer Emma - we don't have one right nearby, but I see there is one on the way to visit our grandson, which may be very useful. Do please continue to share such offers - they are appreciated! P&P

The Dogmother
Their food is award winning - but there's no mention of the provenance of the meat and poultry.......is that right? or have I missed it somewhere on their site. I suppose it would be a bit too much to ask for £5 though I thought the same - I usually avoid these pub discount thingies as you can virtually guarantee that they won't cater for anyone who eats ethically. Dodge
Emma, Thank you for sharing your offer with us. In this credit crunched world we have all been plunged into, we need more offers like this. I have checked the menu out and this is what is on offer: Tipsy Steak Pie BBQ Smothered Chicken 8oz Gammon Scampi & Chips Beef Lasagne Pesto Vegetable Lasagne Toad Out Of The Hole BBQ Burger Stack, Cheese Burger, Tex Mex Chicken Burger Veggie Burger Smothered Chicken Sandwich Now to my mind, this a typical bar/pub menu that you could expect anywhere in the country. So to be able to buy 2 meals for £5-00 is a fantastic deal. I believe we should support these initiatives as they may well help to slow down the 5 pubs a day that are shutting down putting loads of hard working staff on the dole. I have to say that I do not like having food ethics rammed down my throat at every possible opportunity and I suspect that a lot of people on this forum are sick of it as well. Whilst my family can afford to eat free range chicken and British reared pork and not because it tastes better but because we care how the meat we eat is reared, however not everyone can afford to make that choice. It is not illegal to eat any of the food that is on offer at this chain of pubs and the tide has now turned in this country and more and more people are now making informed decisions for themselves thanks to the likes of JO & HFW. So let us continue to post offers that we think may be of use to the forum members without fear of some sort of reprisal or to be made to feel guilty. Common Sense Rules........ Guest
for as many that are "feeling guilty" (which wasn't my intention) or those that are "sick of having food ethics rammed down their throat" (which I don't think I was doing, sorry that you feel that way) there as many that would probably welcome the information. I'm always grateful when someone points these things out to me so I'd appreciate it if I didn't get attacked when I do, I wasn't attacking anyone else If you're grateful for the info from either side then say so but stop villifying me, it's upsetting.
