Recommended Posts

Can any one suggest an answer to a problem.

Whist putting purple spray on a bald hens shoulders she decided to take flight and spray it over everyone. But her landing was rubbish she flew into an other hen!

Knocking this hen over and in the mist of this was heard a break, now we have a hen who will not put both legs down as if the say hurt leg. 2 people covered in purple spray and the hen which caused all this now in the hen hen.

What do we give the hen with the bad leg?

Thank you.

Best regards for 2009.

If you heard a break Ian, then I would get her to the vet asap.

Carefully feel down the legs for anything unusual. She will let you know if it hurts. Any hot spots or strange looking areas do need investigating. I would get her to the vet now if you think she has broken a bone.

I gave the same advice as Christian. :D

What did the vet say, Ian?

Dear Anne

In answer to your question " What did the vet say?" Well we spoke by phone and the comment was that you could bring her down and see what she could do. But it will cost £80 plus medication and does not know what to give her.

Other vets in the area did not want to know the hen which suggests no help available from any vets in our area for hens, and thus it makes a rubbish situation as no vet wants to help.

Have you tried the rva website?

You click find a vet. put your post code in then choose adance settings & tick poulrty.

You might have some luck this way.

In the mean time do you have dogs, do you know anyone with an elderly dog that perhaps has arthrtitis & has METACAM. this has been prescribed for chooks for me & others that have an injured girl. it might help er until you can find helpful vet maybe tom, or someone on here might know one.

don't forget the arnicas, poor chook & you :(

Hi Everyone,

The hen has eat today, she has had meal worm, scrambled eggs, sweet corn, mash and has had some water to drink. Also had some "M".

Still refusing to walk, we have put her in the eglu with the normal run on it .

This is housed within the Henian Castle run so she has contact with the other hens, without having them pick on her.

Tomorrow we are going to try and find a vets which knows something about hens and poultry and try not to rip us off their prices. Does anyone know of a vets in Lancashire who might have some answers to this, thank you.

Best regards

Dear Anne,

Thank you, we are going to contact them first thing in the morning.

Found so many vets do not know one end of a hen to an other and want to

charge double what you quoted plus medication.

Some of them do not even know what Gentian Violet is, pardon.

With our hens would describe it as something you spray on the hen and end

up with it all over you as well as they do not like having it on :!::!:

Will post how we go on with the hen later.

Best regards

Hi

Have you used this vets at all?

Best regards

Sorry Ian and Valerie, didn't see this until now. Yes, I used it for Mindy our ex-batt when she couldn't stand up. Did do a thread in the clinic about her. She had a consultation, metacam and lived inside with us for 13 days before going back out with the others.

Sadly, she died on Saturday but she had a few more months of being a proper chicken.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you to Anne for suggesting the vets at St Annes. We have spent over 2 hours in the car traveling to and from the vets twice.

We phoned at 8.30 am and got an appointment at 9.45 am. So across The Fylde we went to the vets. We were total that ex rays were required, a splint making and then it would be bandaged.

They would phone later today with any news, at about 1.30 we received a phone call so an other drive across The Fylde was made to collect "Baby". The ex rays showed that the knee is badly broken and the vet hope the splint will work other wise it is a very expensive operation, so £143 later she is back home.

Whilst she was at the vets she did lay an egg much to the suprise of the staff shame it was not a golden one then she could have paid for herself :lol:

At home, she is in a large dog cage within the bungalow, she has eaten grapes, sweet corn, corn, mash and has drunk some water much to our relief.

Baby is going back to the vets next week so we will see how thing progress.

More news later.

Best regards

Hi Everyone

Here is the new update. Wednesday 14/01/09.

We have moved Baby the hen in "her" dog cage from the conservatory were she was panting to the Henian Castle run.

We have put 2 heat lamps within the run along with a internal light. Last night we stood the cage on top of an other dog cage partly covered it with plastic sheeting over which were put several travel rugs.

Today we removed the bottom dog cage so that Baby cage was at grown level, we removed the sheeting and loosely recovered the cage with the travel rugs. Late this afternoon Baby had a watched hop around the Henian run. She made an attempt to climb the cube ladders

so was helped up and helped into the nesting area. She tried to settle there but could not rest.

Ian moved her to the floor of the run and stayed close by so no other hen could interfere with her. She hopped over to the elgu and went inside, she is very unstable on her feet.

Ian had to rescue her from the elgu as she got herself stuck between the wooden bars of the floor within the eglu. He then cradle her so she could see around the run and she snuggled into his arms.

As she started to move to show she wanted to go else where she managed to pock Ian in the eye with her comb. Ian had desided to put her back in the large cage where all her food and bedding was as she was in Ian hands she laid her egg.... wow he was suprised :!::!:

When inside the "new " home she then had 5 or 6 drinks of water, which we were please to know about, earlier we had not see her drink.

Can anyone answer this question ( you can find it also on the heading .... Chicken)

We are not Mr & Mrs (Dr) Do-Little we can talk to the animal and understand them and they talk back. Although we do understand our dogs but we are struggling to understand the hens.

Baby is the hen which has a broken bone in its leg and is making a purring sound similar to a cat but we are not sure what this means.

Does anyone know their sounds??

Thank you.

Best regards

Hi Everyone,

News Update Thursday 15 January 2009

Thank you for your comments of support and wishes that "Baby" gets better soon.

She is keep us up looking for any other sites that might have some details about hens with the same injury as hers.

Baby is getting lots of treats and caresses from both of us, usually from Ian.

Ian has found a way to give her water if we are sure she is not drinking. By using the syringe that we use to give her the medicine.

Get a small cup of water and suck up some water into the syringe then slowly put a droplet of water on the top of the beak and allow it to run down to the tip of the beak.

Instinct takes over and she opens her mouth and drinks the water.

This is repeated many times until she has had a few syringes full, she will usually drink some water then by herself.

She is eating chick crumbs, grapes, scrambled egg, grit, oyster shells, meal worms, layers, corn, yogurt and is drinking water even if helped.

She goes in the Eglu with run which is inside Henian Castle run for a little bit of hen get to together time.

We have a cube which the other hens sleep in, also the Eglu with run within the Henian Castle. This is roofed and dry, there are roosting bars , an old wooden folding table, 2 folding wooden chairs for the girls to use as roosting areas also 2 heat lights in and an electric light.

During the day when Baby is in the Eglu we take in an other camping chair for either of us to use, so we can see what is going off and help were possible, at else she is getting hen company as well.

There is space for the hens to move around as the run is big and when the weather is bad as it is now they are dry and safe.

The Henian Castle is 20 feet long x 10 feet wide x 6 feet high it was raised 7 inches as sometimes the garden partly floods.

That is all the news for now.

Best wishes to all
