Hello from a displaced Yank!

 

are you sprouting grains or are you growing brussel sprouts ( 'sprouts' in the UK = images of over-cooked mini cabbage!).

 

If brussels, then my girls got a sprout 'tree' for their Christmas tree and have loved munching away at it.

 

If you are sprouting grains, then I'd love to hear more as I've never tried it for me, much less the chooks, but would love to give it a go!

I gave mine alfalfa sprouts a few times last year. They hoovered them up.

 

There was an article in the Practical Poultry mag a good while back about a hen keeper who grew them in almost industrial quantities to give to her chickens.

 

She reckoned the health benefits were enormous.

 

Must dig out my sprouter again. I've got a couple of packets of seeds in 'that' drawer.

I've never eaten a raw sprout before...

You can grow them simply in a jam jar with muslin for a lid.

Rinse them two or three times daily to stop them going mouldy and leave the jar inclined on a saucer to drain.

I've just found some red radish so will start them this morning.

i have now bought a sprouter off ebay can you use any seeds or only certain ones sorry if stupid question?

My little boy eats raw sprouts, he says they're lovely!

Not convinced we are all talking about the same thing here.

 

John means sprouted seeds as **here** as opposed to Brussels sprouts.

 

At least I think he does!

yes i was referring the sprouted grains/seeds. . .not brussel sprouts.

Brilliant idea John! Have just set up my sprouter and seeds to grow some treats for the girls. Presumably any seeds will be ok for hens? I have sown alfalfa and mung for the girls, and Gourmet Mix for OH and myself.

Those hens will be bouncing fit will all those goodies in them from the sprouts . Mine just eat the lawn . Very interested to know if they seem healthier for eating them though. So please keep us updated.

Well, you can do the same with Brussel sprouts - it is like mustard and cress. You can do it with all brassicas too. Lots of vitamins too.
