strange :(

Recommended Posts

Got up this morning to let Maj and Maz out and my mum said that it looks like my brother or someone had already let them out. So I looked out the window and the entire eglu and the run was tilted over. I could see Maz but not Maj. So I ran into the garden and someone had obviously just tipped the whole thing over! Luckily Maj was inside the eglu, not distressed but quite confused. I let her out and tipped it back over again. The weird thing is the night before I had checked they were both in bed and shut the eglu door. Someone had obviously come in, picked up Maz and tossed her out leaving Maj still in there because both doors were shut on the eglu. Our garden is next to an alley way and my brother said he had heard kids in the night in the alley way so it must have been them. :anxious:

They are both okay now and Maj even laid an egg. I want to put them in the shed tonight and lock it, I dont think the eglu would fit though. Does anyone have any ideas?

I hope we get our walk in run soon. They will be so much safer and we will be able to lock it

What a nasty thing to do  . I'm glad they're both OK :) .

What sort of surface is your eglu on? How about pegging down the run with loads of tent pegs (you can buy screw in ones from Omlet) or lay slabs along the skirt of the run. I use broken bits of paving slab but you could always buy some coping stones. I don't think they cost too much and are just the right size.

That might make the effort of tipping it all over just too much for those low lifes  .

Thats a good idea, my run is pegged down with cheap black plastic pegs (normally used for fleece in gardening) it would be hard work for me to go round and remove them let alone an opportunist who doesnt know where all the pegs are!

How did they get into your property? You can buy strips of plastic with lots of spikes on to deter cats entering over walls, something similar might help.

Personally I'd be tempted to use carpet grippers, but that may not be entirely legal

There is quite a high wooden fence that cordens off our garden from the alleyway but they could have easily clambered over.

That is a good idea! I will mention it to my mum. For tonight have just put them to bed as usual and closed the eglu door. We've shone the garden lights onto the the area where the eglu is in a hope to deter anyone and my mum's boyfriend will be keeping an eye on them during the night because he stays up to do gaming.

Hopefully it'll be the last we see of them. My mum has a theory that they were trying to steal the eglu itself and obviously couldn't lift it over the fence.

How horrible  ,

Both our neighbours on either side were robbed of the contents of their garden sheds last night. Ours is always securely locked, but I am terrified they may come back to our garden for my girls and my eglu as they are so populare at the moment. I will up at the slightest noise all night tonight.

People are such "Ooops, word censored!"s aren't they, I just don't understand the mentality of some folk. What a fright you've had, and I so hope that is doesn't happen again. Thankfully both your girls are safe which is a real relief. Good luck with your walk in run.

Oh Rachael, I'm sorry to hear that - the poor girl that was left inside the Eglu must have been terrified. You'll feel much better with your new run (this has made me more eager to sort one out for our girls).

On another hand, with you, Phoebe and I there seem to be a lot of eglus and cubes arriving in Medway - we should start an Omlet owners club... I think there's a lady in Lordswood too :)

We should! That would be great :D I'm at uni during the week but I'd love to see other people's chickens. They are so funny and entertaining.

It might be worth contacting the council to see if they would consider gating your alleyway - a lot of alleys have had this done now to stop crime and flytipping etc....

I have no alleyways or back entrys etc so my garden is fairly safe and the Eglu is out of sight of prying eyes - but I do think you have to be aware that there are scum out there who would steal it and/or injure or steal your girls! All it takes is a bit of media coverage for those types to cotton on to the fact that they could make a few bob if they could steal it !!

I thinks pegs are a good idea - both against foxes and two legged vermin!

It is not on to have strangers in your garden for any reason... and unfortunately they are likely to try again, especially after a beer.

When we fitted our electric fence there were yellow DANGER signs to put facing ways that the public could approach (like the ones you get on electricity poles, if you have seen them?). You could display something like that - and I can recommend the real thing too. Any human touching it would let out an involuntary shout you would hear and leave the area well alone! These fences have a small red flashing light that also shows it is live...

All good clean fun - and they will forget all about the chickens!
