Hello

Had our eglu set up for three weeks sited on an old veggie patch which had been covered in bark chippings. However this has become a hard mud surface very quickly which is very boring for the chickens not to mention unsightly.

I'm considering digging all this up, laying some thick black plastic sheeting and putting down some new bark chippings. But am now worrying about whether the black plastic will be harmful for the chickens if they start pecking at it. Any views?

Would welcome other suggestions on how they prepared and kept the ground nice for their run, especially on an ongoing basis.

Thanks

Jenny

We have hemcore in our cube run - we top up each week and rake out completely about every 4 - 5 weeks and put onto our borders. Before we put fresh hemcore in, we sprinkle and rake in the soil, garden lime, which helps to break down any build up from the poo.

Our run is covered with a clear shower curtain - covering the run makes a huge difference.

I bought a roll from B&Q with holes about 1cmx1cm - it was about £20 and went all the way under the Eglu and run (also stops things tunnelling in!) I had enough left over to go under both my compost bins and make a cage for rotting leaves in too!

I have some thick plastic greenhouse shading on my grass to stop it getting muddy around the Eglu, its green and has holes it - I guess it would do a similar job under the Eglu run, it was about £4 a metre

Someone on the forum uses holey rubber matting called some thing like 'Grassmat' which is apparently very good too
