Hi guys,

 

I'm looking at getting an eglu from eBay. The one I'm looking at is mark I and so obviously less expensive. I just wondered what the difference between the mark I and mark II is before I make any decisions and how much do you think I should be paying??

The mark 1 has a smaller door and the roosting bars have slightly different layout with some single bars. I don't believe that you can get the plastic roosting bars for the mark 1. Not sure if there is anything else. Don't know about price either as they all seem to hold their price quite well

The mark 1 is smaller overall too so you can have less hens in it I believe

 

The floor is different and has wire mesh instead of plastic in parts

 

I would not pay any more than £200 for a mark 1 personally

You can't get spare parts for a Mark I any more, I believe, so you'd need to be sure it was all in good nick (and not pay too much either!)

 

Did you know you can get reconditioned eglus from Omlet? They only knock off about £40 but it's still a good saving. Everything is brand new apart from the eglu which usually looks almost brand new (mine did!).

I'm not sure of the differences but I've ended up with a Mark 1 and it's fine! I had a mother hen (big old Speckledy) and her 4 babies up until they were, well, over 12 weeks certainly and they were fine all snuggled up. I wouldn't advocate more than 3 fully grown hens, and I let them out to free range so they weren't shut in all day every day, but it's still a fine hen house. Not see a Mark II except in the back of an Omlet van but I think they are quite a bit bigger.

 

Make sure you don't pay over the odds on ebay, I've watched some and people end up paying more than they would getting a recon one from Omlet!
