Nice couple of days with mum + escapee chicken!!

Recommended Posts

I returned yesterday from a lovely few days up north with my parents. Since we moved down here, I've not seen a huge amount of my mum (used to see her several times a week when I was still up north and talk to her every day) and I think she's really missed me. What with her losing her brother just before Christmas and the general winter/new year blues, she was a bit fed up. So I decided to go up for a few days. I had to meet the new tenants moving into our house up there anyway, so combined it with a visit. I stayed two nights, so we had three days and it was absolutely lovely.

We went shopping in Huddersfield on Thursday, and mum bought me a full length black skirt and a black silk top in the Monsoon sale (this is because, thanks to mum telling all my neighbours that I have a good singing voice, I've now joined the local WI choir, for which I need the black outfit so mum said as she'd dropped me in it, she wanted to pay  )

Friday I met the tenants in the morning (I took them some eggs as a moving in pressy and found out that she loves chickens and one day wants an Eglu!!) then in the afternoon we went to see my aunty (whose husband had died just before Christmas) - it was so sad, they had been married more than 60 years and she just kept saying she feels lost. She doesn't like TV and can't really get out so she just sits in a chair all day, with a loud ticking clock on the mantlepiece reminding her of the passage of time. I took her some flowers and she cried, then she cried when we left. That really upset me.

Saturday morning we headed to the White Rose centre near Leeds in separate cars and had the whole morning there, wandering around. Then we had coffee and a muffin and headed our separate ways. I had the most wonderful time. Now hubby is back from Sweden, I can head off for a few days and he can look after the chickens and cats.

However, one of my most friendly girlies was obviously missing me so much she decided to go walkabout to find me! My neighbour was looking out of her kitchen window yesterday lunchtime and saw Tiina wandering around in their drive! It took four of them to catch her, then they rang hubby and asked if he was missing a chicken. Our house is like Fort Knox so the only way we think she could have got out was to either fly 8 foot over a wall + trellis, or use the wheelie bin as a first hop, then over the trellis!! My neighbour said it was hilarious trying to catch her, and that all they kept saying was "Diane will never forgive us if she comes home and we've lost one of her chickens or it's been run over!!" Mum told me she thought Tiina might have been missing me!

Anyway, that's my last few days. I've said to hubby that I think I should do this every other month i.e. go see mum, rather than lose a chicken! It was lovely time out.

End of my waffling on!

Sounds as if you have had a lovely break.....so sad about your poor Auntie though.

Love the story about Tina. What a scamp.

Next time you come up....we could meet for coffee if you fancied dropping off the m/way at Meadowhell. :D It is only a matter of yards from the junction.

As I read that story, I could realy 'feel' how you enjoyed being with your mum.

Sad news about your auntie, but if you are going to be going up more often then that may be something for her to look forward too.

As for Tina, what a naughty little imp she is.

Hi Everyone,

Nice to see the "girls" were missing you. So next time take them with you just buy an estate car and convert the back to a mobile hen hut, then you can have mobile fresh eggs wherever you go.

Was so sorry to read about your sorrow whilst up visiting your mum.

Would have loved to had a video recorder available to watch them try to catch your hen....

Best regards

I know how you feel.

When I was working my widowed 83 year old mum used to visit and stay a lot.

Since I retired and moved 300 miles away we have missed eachother a lot.

It's such an effort for her to come up on the train or for me to drive down for 2 or 3 days but I have promised to go down every six weeks or so.

It's wonderful when you get together though, isn't it :P:P
