Well after our little orpington passed away sadly and as a result of the dog being a shmock we should be getting our walk in run in the next couple of weeks. So with more space to fill I was thinking of getting a few more hens. I am not sure which ones as we already have 3 black rocks. I think I would like to get some different colours this time. Not sure where to get them from. I have got the resent Poultry mag with all the breeders but I would like to hear about people's experinces with different breeders in scotland. Thanks

Hi. I got my first 3 hybrids from Archie McIntyre near Maybole in Ayrshire......lovely big healthy birds. Got my next 2 from All Year Round Birds in Livingston.......and lets just say I wouldn't recommend them :evil: (can pm you with details).

 

Since then, over the last couple of years I have done several hatchings of various breeds that I fancied........kept a couple out of each hatch for myself and sold the rest, some to members on this forum :D (I'm lucky to know someone that took the boys).

 

I will be putting more eggs in the incy end Feb/ beginning March, not sure which breeds yet (prob Cream Legbars amongst them cos they're always popular). They usually go to new homes about 12 weeks.

 

I know you'll be wanting more chooks before this but just to let you know :D

Hi Vanessa :) . I got my 3 girls from Ballencrieff Mains Farm near Longniddry and have been really happy with them. He had a few different breeds so it might be worth giving him him a call :) .

 

This might not be the right number for asking about chickens but I'm sure they could point you in the right direction:

I got some of my girls from Don Dickson in Haddington and paula's poultry in Jedburgh, Don's number is in the back of the practical poultry mag I noticed, he has cotswald Legbars( Blue eggs) and leghorns.

 

Ive just put some Splash orp eggs in the inky, so depending on how many hatch some may be looking for a home

Also hello Gill........glad the girls are doing well....I just love my Wyandottes, especially the Blue-laced.

 

.....and hello again Ruth.....you've got the hatching bug I see :D

 

forgot about Eddie Lovett ( www.ralovett.co.uk .phone 01505 613 075) in Bridge of Weir.......often has Black Rocks and other hybrids, a girl that came to one of my Hen Parties got her chooks from there........but they were de-beaked :(

Fantastic to see you back Fee - hadn't seen you around on forum for ages. Hope all well. You gave me great advice when starting out and I now proudly own 10 hens and 3 turkeys! I got mine from Kittoch (via Practical Poultry forum) who I am sure you recommended and a couple from his mate from the same forum (stevenisfedup).

 

Not supposed to be getting any more now, but will still be interested in what you are hatching as may be swayed by certain breeds (no, I must not get any more birds - yet)!

Thank you all so far - I think I will give paulas poultry a shout once the new surrondings are set up for the girls which could take longer than I had thought. Hubby just deceided that we need a new fence :evil::roll: so I maybe have to wait a little bit longer as we need quotes.

 

We also don't agree on the number of chooks we want to have. Hubbie thinks 6 are plenty but by the way he sells the eggs at work we have to increase our numbers.

 

Ruth just let me know when your little ops are hatching as I really love them. I am still so gutted that the dog killed my little bantam orp. :evil:

Thank you :D Kittoch (the lovely Matt from Carmunock) helped me out by finding homes for my Exchequer Leggy boys last year

 

I saw your boys when I was there - they were wee crackers!

 

He helped me out by finding our silkie a position as a stud when it became obvious it was a boy (you know how it is with silkies) and he also found a lovely home for our araucana/light sussex cross who was a genuine and baffling sex-change!

Thought you hadn't been about for a long time.

 

Penguin, our Exchequer Leghorn we got from you is doing well although has stopped laying for the winter.

 

We alsp got hybrids from Lovetts and McIntyre's and also from Steven in Galston (cream legbar is almost a year old now and still no sign of eggs! - hopefully she'll surprise us at some point!). The Marans we got from him were superb (unfortunately, the splash was killed by a stoat and she laid really dark brown eggs).

 

Lovely to see you back on the forum.

Hi Fi! I have been keeping an eye open for you on the forum. We came to a hen party in Feb. last year and (eventually) took the plunge and our cube and hens arrived in October. We also got our hens at McIntyre poultry and they have been excellent, healthy birds. You might remember my husband being not at all sure about the whole thing - well now he is besotted with the girls and spends all his time in the garden!

Its all your fault Fee, :D nice to see your back on again.

 

18 days to go to hatching :pray: I am totally smitten with Orpingtons so I hope a few come out.

 

I talked to Eddie about getting Black Rocks before I got my Eglu (it came with 2 chooks in the end) and the Black Rocks aren't debeaked but the other hens he has are. He reckoned they just came debeaked when he got them.

 

BTW, hi! I'm new here.....finally got round to registering....
