jill the potter
Have just watched this - It just confirmed what I really knew already......I'll have nightmares about those poor sows chewing the metal bars from sheer boredom. We do eat a lot of bacon but didn't realise that EU standards were so far behind ours. I have always tried to buy British but don't always do the shopping....OH just buys 'whatever' not always reading labels (that's why he can do a shop in half the time it takes me! ) Will have to speak with him tomorrow (diplomatically!) took me quite some time to get him to check labels for free range eggs/chicken etc. Beginning to think DD is right with her vegetarianism?!?!?!?!?! moochoo
An excellent programme. I'm sure it will shock some people enough to buy British and buy more than just loin of pork. I hope it has the huge effect the chicken programme did.

It was the irony of watching a programme about factory farming of pigs whilst eating a bacon sandwich that turned me vegetarian. That was 25 years ago! It really saddens me that such gorgeous animals can still be treated so inhumanely in most parts of the "civilised" world.
surferdog
This really upset me - that poor little pig screaming in agony and the vile sow stalls Pigs are so like dogs in their behaviour and if anybody treated dogs like that they'd be prosecuted. So why oh why are they allowed to do it to pigs?
chelsea
I did watch it, but turned over at the squeamish bits (slaughter and castration). I already buy British - although we dont eat much pork tbh with me being veggie, but am pleased Jamie has brought this ridiculous labelling system to our attention, to say "witshire cured ham" (when its from outside the UK) is very misleading to customers (I have probably made that mistake before). I agreed with everything Joanna Lumley said. On a lighter note, I loved Rupert & penny the pet pigs and it confirmed what I already loved about pigs - their intelligence and that I really want some as pets/family members! chelsea
It really saddens me that such gorgeous animals can still be treated so inhumanely in most parts of the "civilised" world. I completely agree, its about time the whole animal welfare system in the EU had a big kick up the backside, from the terrible way animals are exported from country to country (whilst alive) to their treatment before and during slaughter We're in the 21st century not the dark ages.... Olly
Very interesting, must admit I only became aware of the label confusion because of a recent post on here, that I think linked to a newspaper article about it. However I already try to buy free-range only, and I was very pleased to see the strategically placed adverts from Waitrose in the breaks, saying that all their pork and sausages are 'outdoor reared'. Not perfect, but better than the vile EU stuff. It does leave me with a dilemma though - organic pork is likely to be free-range, but may have been castrated, which I definitely thought was wrong to do without anaesthetic. On th other hand, the outdoor reared pork has probably been slaughtered younger, and so hasn't been castrated. It won't make me return to being a vegetarian though. Unfortunately it's a truth that most rare breeds would have died out completely by now, if "Ooops, word censored!"ody ate them! I am going to try and buy more of the cheaper cuts of meat. Well done Jamie!
Guest
the look in the eyes of those poor, poor pigs in was it Denmark or Holland, i can't remember? It was utterly heartbreaking. We've bought pork from missuscluck in the past and got to tickle the pigs, they are lovely creatures and ANY animal treated in such an appalling way just breaks my heart. I love tickling pigs, this is a cple of pics of me with missuscluck's pigs and the other is at Apple Jack's Farm in Cheshire. http://www.applejacksfarm.co.uk/apple-jacks-farm.html weird, i was wearing the same blouse! It wasn't the same day! I think the scene of the slaughter was very upsetting as I find it hard to believe that the struggling and noises are involuntary spasms Half of me thinks it's okay to eat meat as long as it's been raised in high welfare standards and killed as humanely as possible but the other half of me really wants to be able to be vegetarian. I find it very hard to reconcile the 2 halves and find myself getting upset quite often over the whole issue. p.s. ETA- missuscluck's boys pigs went for slaughter earlier than the girls as they hadn't been castrated.
Guest
p.p.s the industry are certainly out to decieve and mislead aren't they! "Wiltshire Cured" really does imply British pork doesn't it! i have to say I always buy freedom food endorsed/outdoor reared bacon/sausages/ham (that's when I don't get chance to go to the butcher) but there's no such standard for generic salami, chorizo, pepperoni etc. I'll have to do some googling and try and find some free range charcuterie and stock up the freezer as I usually make my own pizzas. We were eating a (home made) ham and pepperoni pizza while watching the prog. The ham was definitely British but not the pepperoni
chickencam
Charcuterie is a real problem, we buy British pork products, but I am a big fan of Chorizo so would love to find a good British source of this too. We prefer shoulder of pork as a roasting joint to other cuts, so we are doing our bit there. I also love belly pork. What I liked with Jamie's programme was that he was very realistic about his aims. Starting with getting people to buy British where our welfare standards are higher. From there we can move forward towards higher standards within this country. chickencam
Thankyou They are even at Cheltenham farmer's market. I haven't been to the market for a while because we have found it quite disapointing. I must be on today, but I'm bogged down in car insurance quotes at the moment, just on here while on hold
Guest
the nearest stockist to me is Ludlow! about 2 hours away but the Ludlow Food centre does look tempting I found this, I remember seeing him make it on TV and thought it looked lovely at the time, plus it uses the cheaper cuts of pork jamie was on about last night. I reckon, once made you could form it into patties or balls or whatever and freeze it after it's had its 24 hours to let the flavours meld. http://www.channel4.com/food/recipes/chefs/hugh-fearnley-whittingstall/mexican-style-chorizo-recipe_p_1.html
chickencam
I buy my sausages from a farm in Ludlow, http://www.tudge-meats.co.uk I have bought 2 lots so far in bulk and frozen them. We visited the farm to collect our turkey at Christmas on the way back from visiting family, lovely people We have not been into the town unless you count me driving terrified through the narrow streets after missing a turning, but we will one day

chooklady
The programme was very interesting, I think Jamie is very good at this sort of programme and I think he gets through to people that others wouldn't. We've been eating cheaper cuts of pork for a while, in fact I have a hand of pork for this Sunday's roast. £7.23 masses of meat for 5 with some over for Monday (Local butcher). Pork is probably my favourite meat, I will never be vegetarian as I adore meat but I whole heartedly agree with free range and when it comes to slaugther then it should be done without stress and as quickly as possible. I would love to be in a position where I could raise my own pigs and chickens for meat. I shop in Waitrose, all there pork products are from outdoor reared pork and some is organic aswell. Have a look at this site, a Scottish meat company. The outdoor reared pork belly joint is brilliant, there are 3 sizes. All the produce comes chilled in polstyrene boxes and providing you don't order too late in the day it comes next day. I think delivery is £5 http://www.campbellsmeat.com/products/pork.cfm
