alih
We have 3 girls and have always chosen our chicken names by family vote - as you can gather from the signature I have 4 kids who have had a lot of input!!! But I am getting 2 ex-batts next weekend as a Valentine's gift from my wonderful husband and wanted to know if you guys think I'm being selfish wanting to name them both myself?! Silly I know but as I do ALL the chicken care without execption in this house (and am glad to) I feel that it's my turn to name MY chickens......but 3/4 kids are protesting like mad, although they never give the ladies a second glance. My 4th child is with me on this, bless her. how have you all chosen names? And should democracy win over middle-aged stroppiness? Again! Thoughts please? Cooks
I say name them yourself, they are YOUR present you go ahead! I was going to name my new two myself as well and then OS goes and fracture his cheekbone and uses the sympathy thing to get his way what names do you have in mind??? alih
I hardly dare tell in case you all disapprove - but I have been watching the Wire and think Bubbles and Omar (2 down and out, batterd, bruised and scarred, raggle-taggle hoodlums) are wonderful characters, so would like to call them that. But my kids are horrified and want to call them things like Dr Egg!! Thanks, Lynsey, I think I may insist!
Cooks
I think the names you have chosen are great!, go for it, stick to your guns... I have ended up with Flo and Dory!
Chickvic
I didn't get to pick a name for this lot of chickens, but when we expand (looking at getting another 4) I will have the chance to name 1! Go for it - remind them who has to do all the work
BeckyBoo
I let my children name them to start with, but as we've had chicks and so on as well as ex-batts, it's got to the stage where I just announce that "this one is called this" or "this one is called that". If the children come up with something fab that I like I change my mind and say, Oh alright we'll call that one Dandelion then but mostly once it's been announced that something is called this, and I've sounded definite, they've pretty much accepted it. Mine are 3 6 and 7 so I suppose it could be a bit age dependent. Good luck with yours BeckyBoo
alih
Men after all the protestations this evening about me daring to want to name my chickens, I overheard my husband telling my 8-year-old son he should think about "playing the long game" and basically pester me in drip fashion till I caved in. So, instead of considering compromise on one of the names, I am naming both myself. Moral of the tale: when plotting against womenfolk, do it out of earshot or it will backfire horribly!! Chickvic
Fancy saying something like that when you could hear! Don't blame you - I'd put my foot down too!

dancing cloud
My brother's children named 3 of mine (Chance, Joy and Dandelion) and I chose the others around them. Next 3 comng in March will be all mine to name! Insist on having your choice - they are your present after all
surferdog
Name them yourself, you've chosen great names. My younger kids were allowed to name a chicken each and I ended up with Hyacinth Bucket and Quicksilver the Surfer Chicken! (Now more sensibly shortened to Hyacinth and Sylvie )

You clean the poo, so you pick the names. it's as simple as that.
