Chook n Boo Mum
I'm sitting here at the computer buzzing & whirring as it does, with the batties outside the double glazed patio doors in their covered run. I mention these facts because I can hear them singing - it sounds like Gizmo singing on the Gremlins They did it yesterday too, is this normal? My others all chunter rather than make long clear sounds like they are doing. I am hoping it's because they are happy, and until someone tells me otherwise, I'll stick with that thought My 3 sets of hens all seem to "speak" slightly differently, DH thinks they all have different accents & dialects, but I think it more like different languages! Are we ever so slightly bonkers........ Sha x
ClaireG
As i don't know any diffrent, i'd say it's because they're happy. My new girls boks are a bit diffrent to my old ones If your bonkers then so am I
Suzy
Mine sing too! It's really cute. The other day they were standing outside the window doing a high pitched purring sound so I don't know what that was about. Coupled with the loud 'I'M HAVING AN EGG/ I'VE JUST HAD AN EGG" squawking we also get there are all sorts of noises eminating from the back garden. Sure the neighbours think we have gremlins and not hens.
The Dogmother
I like the happy clicking and purring noises mine make as they pootle around looking for bugs.
Saronne
Add me to the 'bonkers' list. I don't have ex-batts, but I'm sure my hens sing. Or purr, or something gremlin-ish. Sometimes they sound like grown-up chicks - a sort of whistling 'peep-peep' especially when I come out to feed them, or see what they're up to. One of mine even makes this strange 'heh, heh, heh' when getting ready to lay or having just laid. Saronne
Barkisland
I have also noticed Gerty and Flo making a funny noise - it's like a long whistle, just one note that goes on for a few seconds. Mary, my broody Light Sussex, is making a whole new range of new noises lately, most of them sounding very grouchy, and she even growled at me yesterday! McChook
My girls sort of 'purr' - usually when I've given the cube and run a thorough cleaning and raked out and replaced all the chippings on the floor. They usually make this noise when trying to bury themselves and bath in everything around them, so yes, it's a good noise

Yours must be the Rory Bremner of the hen world Saronne I just thought she was a little odd...... but no....... you are right...... she is a hen impressionist. I should take her to some auditions, maybe she could be famous, or make our fortune
PeckyBeak
Thanks, Just had a right good 'chuckle' at this thread Who needs the TV? Incidently, we have up to 7 female pheasants who come daily for a share of the wild bird seed. When I bring out the food they get really excited and make a squeeky ' ee eee, ee eee, sound - which of course I do back. Well it's only polite. My neighbours call me the crazy woman.
