dreamingdolly
Hi LJ's chooks thanks for your message, what you said about your chooks and where they like to sleep sounds hilarious. I grew up with some very strange animals and seem to have carried on with the trend. One of our cats fell in love with our spaniel when she was a kitten and still feels the same at the grand age of 2years,she likes to sit on the poor dogs head whilst purring and giving the dog a massage,"hmmm" and i promise i'm not joking we have it on film.Wonder what kind of Hens we'll end up with?? . Hi Kittycat,it's nice to know of someone closer to us,Im looking forward to seeing chealsea's eglus but would be nice to see yours when your up and running, can't make up my mind what colour to go for so it would be nice to see some eglus in the flesh so to speak.I'd also be interested in seeing how you have put your run together if thats ok with you,I'll wait to hear from you thanks

blackgold
Ex battery hens are hybrids. Rhode island red crossed with marans or something similar. love Sue
Boybeck
When I was thinking about buying an eglu I found youtube really helpful. If you search for eglu there are a few videos on there.
chelsea
Another question We are consdering, hens from the Battery Hen Welfare Trust, and I was wandering what breed they are thanks for reading my messages guys. I think they are hybrids or rhode island reds or a possible mix of RIR & something else?
tom123
They are hybrids... RIR X Light Sussex, the same as a goldline, warren, gingernut ranger...all the same just different breeder names. Tom

dreamingdolly
Thanks for that,We've hit a slight problem for now so will be a little longer before we can get our eglu, our lovely spaniel has just been diagnosed with suspected poyometra which i'm told is life threatening unless she is spayed tomorrow, what a blow she is 12+1/2 and i really do not want to put her through a major op at all, please keep every thing crossed for her guys,we're taking her in tomorrow morning to get her final results of her blood tests and we should know from there what needs to be done for her .speak soon. blackgold
thats awful and could be life threatening. We always spay our girl dogs when they get to age 8 or if we are not having pups from them. JJ our new mum will be spayed when the pups are 3 months old. She is my obedience dog and i get fed up waiting for her to finsih maternity duties but her other litter is stunning. Where do you live? i have a spare eglu you could borrow, before you get cold feet.....lol love Sue
dreamingdolly
Hi guys thankyou for your kind thoughts and wishes. what makes me cross is the fact that no vet has ever really said just how important it is to spay "Ooops, word censored!"es and what the implications are for not doing so. . She has another scan thurs to find out for def if it is pyometra or not.if it's not then I have said i don't want her to have the op at her age.if it is then theres only one way to take her for her sake.lucky for us she is generaly a very fit and healthy girl. As for chickens, don't worry about me getting cold feet, their Red hot and getting Hotter by the day, thanks for the offer for the lone of the eglu though really kind of you but i can hang on i little longer. PhilipCaldwell
Hi, I receive my eglu this coming monday and im very excited indeed .However i was wondering, can normal hens be kept with banthams or do the bigger ones pick on them?Iam thinking of starting off with 2 hens and seeing how it goes, then increasing my flock with maybe a bantham or two.Cant wait to taste the eggs!!Omlet is such a great website, it realy has made keeping chickens cool! Thanks Phil chickens follow soon!!
Egluntyne
Hello and welcome to the forum. Some do successfully keep bantams and hybrids together, but many have found it hasn't worked, for the reason you described. I'd wait till you have a little experience of chicken keeping before trying a mixed flock tbh, and then you will be able to sort out any issues confidently. PhilipCaldwell
thanks for the advice. In that case i think i will just get extra hens and extend the run. Phil

dreamingdolly
Hi guys just to let you know that our spaniel is confusing the vets they don't know what is wrong with her, said on thur that she isn't in any danger of pyometra at this moment in time although she is till showing signs that she could get a full blown pyometra during her next season, what they are worried about now is her white blood cells and her bladder which doesn't sound good ,she has to go back again for a 3rd scan on tues and to get results of another blood test which was sent away on thur so should know more hopefully by then. At the moment she is running around like a puppy as she is on antibiotics and painkillers and other things that seem to be easing whatever is causing this.will let you know whats happening soon
mostin
Glad to hear she is pain free and feeling better DD even if you don't know the proper cause yet.
