Mid life crisis!

Recommended Posts

Sorry to hear that you are feeling down and hope it soon passes. As everyone has said, try (not easy I know) to do what YOU want to.

As people were mentioning the purple poem, I hope you don't mind my posting it...

When I am Old

I will wear Purple!

When I am an old woman,

I shall wear purple - -

With a red hat which doesn't go,

and doesn't suit me.

And I shall spend my pension

on brandy and summer gloves and satin sandles,

And say we've no money for butter.

I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired

and gobble up samples in shops

and press alarm bells

and run with my stick along public railings,

and make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain

and pick flowers in other people's gardens

and learn to spit!

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat

and eat three pounds of sausages at ago,

or only bread and pickles for a week,

and hoard pens and pencils

and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry,

and pay our rent

and not swear in the street,

and set a good example for the children.

We must have friends to dinner

and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?

So people who know me

are not too shocked and surprised

when suddenly I am old,

And start to wear purple!

LOL thanks all! I'm feeling a bit brighter about it today and I think I will go ahead with the party - I can send out the PURPLE invites this weekend! I think another part of the problem is that I DON'T want to invite some of the family, frankly I want very little to do with them and I'd like to make the point.

Not sure that will wash with Mum though - who will probably invite them to stay the night. These are the people who avoid us at Christmas and last year for James party followed by adult party said they couldn't come as they were seeing their son the FOLLOWING weekend (they do naff all usually). Then graced us with their presence as a last minute decision, arriving BEFORE LUNCH (she helps with party food) when he just demanded tea, food and the telly on! He didnt' get a lot his own way though as later in the day Mums family took over the lounge and commandeered the telly for my step grandad who is old and not quite with it.

I'm glad you all reminded me about the purple thing too - I wear purple pretty much all the time - one of the kids today said "miss you aren't wearing Purple today!", another pointed out that my blouse was lilac and I said "you can't see my underwear" (which prompted Mr gobby in the corner to pipe up "you can't say that - I can get you sacked for that".

I'll see about booking that disco too.

Glad you are feeling more upbeat Pengy. Booking the party will do you the world of good I'm sure.

I'm 40 in April and not at all bothered about the age, but I do have a bit of 'winter blues' too, combined with 'OFSTED expected at any moment and I ruddy well wish they'd get it over with' blues . I'm lucky enough to have an OH I think the world of, but if he disappeared into thin air tomorrow I am positive that I would not be too keen on the 'dating' busisness, I wouldn't have the foggiest idea where to start in fact.

I am not having a party, they're not really my thing - I would rather go for a meal with a few friends and family. However we are having another kind of celebration. OH and I are going for a short break with our oldest friends - paid for largely with our very generous friend's air miles as he accumulates loads of them through his job. Both OH and friend were 40 last year so this is to be a triple celebration.

All I know is that I will need my passport, and that the kids are going to Granny and Grandad's house, and that is all..... I have no idea where we're going :eh: .

Whether it's Rome, Reykjavic or Riga, I don't mind, the surprise will be the best present.

Sorry to hear you are down in the dumps. I won't pretend to know what it's like being a single parent. Is there anyone that could baby sit once a week so you could join a club, or take up a hobby? Dark evenings don't help either.

Positive vibes coming your way.

Thanks - I have a live in babysitter in the granny annext - I go to bed at 9pm all week though too damned tired to stay up any later!

I do go to pole dancing lessons on a Sunday and the gym, occasionally!

Start counting in hex (base 16). That means you are only 28.

I do that... unfortunately I have just turned 2A, which doesn't work quite so well!

I found myself single a couple of years before I turned 28 (hex). I found I didn't meet anybody... well I'm an engineer so I work with a load of men but that doesn't count.

I was going to try speed dating (but never got round to it). I tried dinner dating (once).

I also took up a new hobby... marshalling... but I didn't do that to meet somebody ... well not anybody special... just other like-minded people.

However, I unexpectedly found myself a new somebody special. He is the most wonderful, considerate person I could have hoped to meet. We have also done some amazing things I wouldn't have imagined... Last year we marshalled at the Singapore Grand Prix, climbed Sydney Harbour Bridge, marshalled at Australia's "Great Race" (the V8 Supercar race at Bathurst), got really into ice hockey.

I don't feel any different to before I was 28 (hex) but I've had a lot more good experiences than before I was 28 (real 28)

I remember when I was single that when all the children had gone to bed and the house became quiet I felt quite alone. I wasn't really "lonely" because I didn't want another relationship but the feeling of being the only adult responsible for everything could be too much at times and I would feel down. However, time moved on and I got used to it and gained my confidence as a single parent and then I met my now husband and my life went down a new path. It is hard not having anybody to share the parenting and domestic life with but you do a great job and you should celebrate your achievements and life by doing something special for your 40th. There thats my thoughts... :D

Jennifer Aniston turns 40 this year - you are in good company!!

My OH took me to Barcelona as a surprise for my 40th back in 2006 and then I arranged to climb Kilimanjaro as my mid life crisis.

Hope you are feeling better soon Pengy!
