Dust bath size

Recommended Posts

Please could you give me some advise please.

I am having a cube, 2m run and 3 chickens delivered on the 19th Feb so getting all my bits together that I will need (and a wish list of nice to haves!).

I am planning on having a dustbath with play sand, compost and a sprinkling of mite stuff in.

Today in Homebase I found a PURPLE little round trug and wondered if it will be big enough to have as the dustbath (as the cube is purple!).

Its about a foot (30cms) wide at the top and being a virgin chicken keeper wondered if it was too small or will be ok?

Doesnt matter if too small as like it anyway to put my other chickeny bits in.

Thanks

Michelle

Mine have a small tyre (you can see it below) its probably not much bigger than 14" across but I wouldn't want to go much smaller. You can give your trug a try and if its too small could use it for poo-picking instead - I have several and they are very useful anyway. You can also get tubtrugs that are shallow and bigger - Homebase do them in a few colours or you can get them on line and they are bound to do purple!

We have a small ikea crate in the garden for ours:

They can all (just) fit in it together, but then there's ro room to flick! (The orp then gets squeezed out). We have a smaller, shallower tray in the run from flytesofancy made from recycled tyre rubber!

They are filled with compost, mite powder and diatom :)

I have the same as Chelsea and quickcluck, a shallow tubtrug, but in bright pink, it contrasts nicely with their blue eglu :D My 2 are BIG girls, and they can both get in it together very comfortably.

If you google tubtrugs and have a look you will see all sizes in beautiful colours - I also bought a small shallow lilac one which I use for carrying stuff around, extra hemcore, all the bits and bobs when I clean the eglu out etc. I may use it for my little Pekin's dustbath when they get a bit older :D
