ICT GCSE grading confusion. Advice please.

Recommended Posts

I know that there are a few ICT teachers out there and I was wondering if one of you could clear up some confusion for me please.

Seb took his GCSEs in June 08, & we emigrated out here almost immediately after the exams finished. His school emailed his results to us in August & said that he'd achieved 2 B grades in ICT. We weren't able to get to the school to collect his certificates (for fairly obvious reasons) and decided against getting them posted out here because we seem to have a few things go missing in the post, and didn't want to risk losing his certificates. His current school were fine about that since we'd all decided to let him do the back end of year 11 again here (different school year structure over here & it seemed kinder to let him repeat some of year 11 whilst he was settling in, rather than join year 12 over half way though the school year). But they wanted to see evidence of his GCSE quals before he was accepted onto certain courses in year 12.

So MIL has just been over & brought his GCSE certificates with her. However 3 certificates, 1 from AQA with a few GCSEs on, 1 from Edexcel with a few more GCSEs on it, but no mention on either of an ICT GCSE. In fact no mention of ICT anywhere, nor any B grades that aren't attatched to a known about subject.....if that makes sense.

The 3rd certificate is a bit of a mystery but it's Edexcel "Award, Certificate & Diploma Qualifications in Digital Applications" to certify that Seb obtained level 2 (2 qualifications): award in Digital applications (CREDIT) & certificate in Digital applications (CREDIT). When I approached Seb's old school they have said that these are indeed his 2 B grades in ICT. However his new school don't recognise them as such, Seb claimed his GCSEs when he applied to do NCEA level 2 (ie NZ equivalent of AS levels) & since he can't give evidence of those grades he's now been put into NCEA food technology  . He's nothing against food technology.....but it's really not what he wants to do. Before I go in and create a fuss at his new school I want to be really sure that I've got my facts right, so are the quals on his certificate really equivalent to a GCSE grade B......and if so why the heck don't they just put that on the flippin' certificate to keep everything nice & simple for thicko parents like me :roll::lol::lol::lol:

Thanks so much for any advice that you can give me :D

Qualifcation equivalences are very confusing! Try Edexcel for a definitive statement first. It advertises that it is the main provider of internationally recognised qualifications so it should be interested in defending its qualification. There is a telephone number for international enquiries +44 (0)1204 770696 or an email for subject specific enquiries ScienceSubjectAdvisor@edexcelexperts.co.uk.

Or go to the top for an independent view. The organisation with responsibility for maintaining and developing the national curriculum and associated assessments, tests and examinations in England and Wales is QCA - the Qualifications Curriculum Authority. Contact it at info@qca.org.uk for its view of the status of these qualifications.

Good luck!

OK it looks like he did a course called DiDA the Certificate is indeed a 2 award qualification and level 2 is GCSE level. I'm sorry to tell you though that Credit is not the equivelant of a B but of a C - this may mean the school work got "marked down" when it was moderated - TBH every school around here dropped this qualification like a stone when the marking was constantly changed and we were unable to see what we were doing or grade the kids work with any confidence.

Level 2 qualifications ARE the equivelent of GCSE's - they are counted as such in the schools resuts but there is always a chance they won't be recognised as such elsewhere. The level 2 qualifications are vocational rather than exam based which is good for ICT as practical skills are more important than theory!

This was however a hard course to pass and he certainly does deserve recognition for doing so!

The information the school might look at from the website is here http://www.edexcel.com/quals/dida/about/Pages/default.aspx

oh  DiDA

we did this, hated it (with a passion)

DiDA is equivalent to 4 GCSE's Fred, there was never a 3 GCSE option (heaven knows why)

it was really difficult to get a good grade in it, in fact, we had 20 students enter it (at the local college) and only 1 got a level 1 qualification, the other 19 got nothing

Cate, its terrible that NZ dont recognise the qualification, it was really difficult to get a good grade, so if your son has 2 credits, he actually did really well :D

Cathy - the QCA wouldn't agree a 3 unit qualification which is why there wasn't one! The since have and last I heard it was going to be "Trida" cos they couldn't think of anything else!

In our first grading one of my girls got the Distinction but never saw another one. The last year I was teaching this I had kids who were A and A* across the board and after doing LOTS of after school sessions they got B's.

I'm enjoying OCR so much more - still a lot to get the high grades but at least it's attainable!

Hi Pengy and Couperwife,

Can you tell me anything about an certificate in imedia? My YD was given the option of the OCR or a cert in imedia, which she chose. I understand that the OCR can be equivalent to up to 2 GCSEs at grade B (is that right?) but the imedia is lower. Any info?

sorry to hijack your thread, Cate!

I do a course that has a level 2 equivalency (CoPE). The Level 2 qualification is the same number of points as a GCSE grade B. I looked on the edexcel website and found this for you....

http://www.edexcel.com/migrationdocuments/DiDA/DiDA_GCSE_equivalencies.pdf

It shows you where his Pass/ Merit/ Distinction grade at level 2 sits against a traditional qualification ( and that his CREDITs are worth B grades)

Hope it helps - this will happen more and more with diplomas and the foundation learning tier (which I have to read up on this week end!!)

DOH! I stand corrected!

I guess the OCR three grade system had me confused - I'd totally forgotton you could get pass as well for DiDA - should have remembered really as most of my hardworking students just about s"Ooops, word censored!"ed in there!

Thank you all so much for your help, I just knew that I could rely on some of you helpful Omleteers to point me in the right direction 8) .

I'll print some of those references off when I go into school next week to explain his grades. I don't think that it's so much that NZ won't accept his results, it's more that they didn't understand them (nor did I, so I'm not surprised that they didn't get it) andfrom what they could see he couldn't give evidence of achieving the results he said he had. With any luck now they'll accept his results and reconsider him for ICT NCEA level 2.
