Help Needed with Car Road Tax

Recommended Posts

My Mini One Diesel has CO2 emissions of just 129 - but that's enough to take it into the £120 band :(

Very annoying  - it does 50-60 mpg.

Carl gets clobbered for daring to drive a Defender - because all 4x4 drivers are tarred with the same brush, whether you use a Defender on a farm or drive a Chelsea tractor

It's the RX-7 replacement... the RX-8

Yes it needs the oil checking reqularly, but it doesn't drink that much... a colleague with a new Golf reckoned he used more oil that I do.

And, yes, very thirsty on petrol... 25 mph (motorways) is good. But I generally only drive to work... if we go anywhere else we usually go in my partner's car.

Oh and I moved to within 3 miles of work then work moved to 25 miles away :?

But I love my car and think she is stunningly good looking.

:clap::clap: ooh well pleased that I was nearly right.

Not surprised you love your car so much. They are beautiful. Ex OH is going to sell his RX-7 soon as he just can't afford to run it anymore which is such a shame as it's stunning.

I'm looking for a new car at the moment and we had a brand new Scooby (Subaru Imprezza) prior to our separation but we had to sell it when we went our separate ways. I would soooooooo love another one but I've got no chance of being able to afford to run one whilst I'm on my own. Hey ho. Maybe one day

Hazel, I'm on your side, but isn't car fuel already taxed? and if your car is less fuel efficient, aren't you then paying for more fuel ... which is taxed? Or did I mistake 'fuel efficient' for 'less polluting'? The two can go hand in hand, but don't always...I think? (Not sure) :?

Yes but this would be the VED (vehicle excise duty) which pays for essential road maintenance ( :liar: ) etc. Though it appears it's now called Road Tax :?

It seems there are now trials taking place in various parts of the country for Pay as You Go Road Tax.

Quite interesting to read the coments :|

Doh! I was only one letter out...

Actually 90mph+ on the motorway is more of a problem because the engine is so quiet,

Yes car fuel is already taxed. But if you want to reduce or eliminate the yearly car tax you could raise the same revenue by increasing the tax on fuel.

This could be seen as "fairer" because it is a tax on using your car (and causing polution) rather than a tax on ownership.

and if your car is less fuel efficient, aren't you then paying for more fuel ... which is taxed? Or did I mistake 'fuel efficient' for 'less polluting'? The two can go hand in hand, but don't always...I think? (Not sure) :?

If your car is less fuel efficient it you do use and therefore pay more for fuel and you pay more tax on the fuel. So a more fuel efficient car is probably less polluting. The less fuel you burn to go each mile, the less carbon dioxide you produce to go that mile. But there are other pollutants such as particulates (more a problem on some diesels) and nitrous oxides. I think the relationship between these and fuel consumption is more complicated and it may depend on how the engine burns the fuel but I don't really know too much about this side of it.

Petrol is taxed twice, first with fuel tax and then with VAT (which I assume can be claimed back if you are VAT registered business, and fuel tax can't?).

Am I right in thinking that the fuel tax was raised in the budget to offset the drop in VAT? It will be interesting to see if the extra bit is removed when the VAT goes back up to 17.5% :?:?
