sandyhas3chucks
Not going blind am I ? Was it taken off because of the problems. Am looking for info on Retfords, pooh testing. I think I may be spelling it wrong.FOUND RETFORD SITE This is why. Having got Moe up & running, head chook is still not right. She was "not right when you may recall I took all for for a family health check, (they weren't ill then, just 4 not quite right, niggly worries. Well blow me down if head Chook Meany didn't lay 2 lashes the very next day, Ah ha I thought that what was wrong with her. Anyway she hasn't been right she may or may not have laid a softee (I think it was a blip for her mate. I don't really think she has laid in months.) Anway her crop is not emptying at night. Have home treated for sour crop, but really not happy with her so off to vet.AGAIN SHE was prescribed metronidazole 1/2 tablet per day. I am a real woos at giving it to her as am so worried about getting it down her windpipe. It is 1/2 a pill almost as big as a paracetamol! He hopes there will be improvement over the weekend. oh also to carry on with the daktarin. and to get some vitamin B into her (marmite) THat was yesterday pm. Today She was 1/2 hour later than her friend coming out which is not like her, but happily tucks in o cucumber so at least I feel it is not sugary which will sour the crop. she will also eat bokashi bran but no longer mixed with probiotic plain yoghurt, or yogrhurt on it's now. protein wise she will eat 1/2 scrambled egg 2 x a day. stiill won't go back to live maggots. She is happy for a while eating grass & sun baking. Oh he said she feels surprisingly empty. Tummy end! I am not very optimistic to be honest as I don't like the yellow liquid pooh. although there are now 20p size green digested poog blobs in the middle of this? but not much & not often. Any positve thoughts Edited March 9, 2009 by Guest

sandyhas3chucks
This may be paranoid AND she doesn't have all the symptoms either but lots sound like blackhead.? the vet took a look under microscope for parasites & found none but am I right in thinking they would be in the gut. Oh hell need to find retfords & send some in.[erhaps I should worm yet again.did Oct or Nov. will it be effective if her crop is not empying? sandyhas3chucks
day 4 of the anti biotic. though not due dose 4 until midday. I felt more optrimistic yesterday as she happily drank about 1/4 pint from drip off syringe. The water had avipro in Took an hour but hoped it might help flush through this crop. She poottled about for about half hour also just stood for a while but did peck at grass & at some dirt which i hoped was a good sign. however she put herself to bed early & I had to get her up for her 3sd dose Daktarin & she drank a little more and ate some cucumber. I keep offerenig her other things but she will only eat the cucumber . am I right to let her eat what she wants as long as she is eating something.? her crop is still not emptying overnight in fact pos due to the water & food is a tad bigger. she is passing stuff which looks green & digested with the yellow runny around it. Any thoughts please, my vet is great buy there is no Avian specialist that I can see near here although Pup is an hour from me maybe I should take her to her vet? ANY THOUGHTS please
sandyhas3chucks
Think she is finally improving. The vet was very flumoxed by it. he read the blackhead posting & rechecked. the anti b she was having would have sorted that out by now or she & others would already be dead! So that was ok. She had temp 105 so changed to Batytril & anti inflam and there was an improvement all be it small by bed time & late up next day & today but toiday she perked up heaps. Een had a dust bath in the sun, & choose to eat dry mash . heres hoping for continued ihealth improvement. I have not been able to see pooh today as she was happy pootling outside but have not moticed any bright vivid yellow poos. sandyhas3chucks
thanks Plum, not as good as I had hoped. She is bright enough in herself now & eating normal stuff out of choice. I was out when she got up yesterday so was not able to check for an empty crop. This morning although greatly reduced it is NOT empty. She DID eat some live maggots finally yesterday. I have no idea if this is normal during recovery, and pooh still yellow. need to be on POOH watchg today

sandyhas3chucks
She is up happy, eating being a chicken BUT that crop STILL not empty.! IT is REDUCED but still like a small childs fist full a fairly firm not squishy, neither of us have "seen" her drinking but I am putting very liquidy mash down. Will be watching more today, found a small wet yellow pooh on floor.a minute ago:( WE are not all obssessed by pooh at all are we. Thanks as usual for the support. Will get some fresh maggots today as she is now eating & see how that goes.
sandyhas3chucks
She is on the mend. Tuesday changed to Baytril, & continue with Daktarin. Also gave anti inflam as temp 105! It has made a dif, she was perkier. almost by the time we got home, She was not apart from that one day drinking so gave layers mash so rwet she could drink too, and seemed to prefe it. as she improved and ate real chicken food, ie dry mash by choice I left off the Daktarin fight.(she really didn't like it as it sticks to the sides!) there was daily improvement but even this morning (sunday) her crop is not fully empty but no more virant yellow pooh! her crop has been deccreasing overnights over the last 4days ONLY!!!! To see her in the sun dust bathing with her sisters was just brilliant! she's bossing them all about again!

sandyhas3chucks
Seems I was premature.as she deteriorated again. just been to the vet again. & there IS something else going on as she still has a temp. down from last weeks 107 but still up, she has lost weight since then also. she is on last attempt week, though it is really not hopeful. he thinks she has cyst or absess, (brain got fuddled & confused with emotion of it) One last stab at a strong not licence antibiotic, It 1. might finish her.(but unlikely) 2. knock infection right out & all will be well or 3. knock infection out with improvement(as before) but if as suspects she will deteriorate again. At that point I will know all has been done and will PTS before she gets poorly again. In the mean time she gets to eat what ever she wants, gets to go outside if we get the sun to do what she wants where she wants until it is time to go nearly 10 months of pampering is a nice retirement if that is how it has to be. What a horrid roller coaster this is, but right now she IS eating. She has a selection of her favourites about her. and there IS still a little glimer of hope. Sending lots of positive thoughts to you, I'm also beginning to wonder if ex-batts need worming more often, maybe they are more susceptible? Not sure just a feeling.
