Cat has infected leg (again) and needs antibiotics. Searching for inspiration on how to get him to take them, I came across this

 

 

How To Give A Cat A Pill

1) Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill in. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2) Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3) Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4) Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5) Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

6) Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7) Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9) Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10) Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11) Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Throw t-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12) Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap.

13) Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14) Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15) Arrange for SPCA to collect cat and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

How To Give a Dog a Pill

1) Wrap it in bacon.

 

 

I think I will follow the vet's advice and open the capsule up and attempt to disguise the powder in food.....

We've had similar fun trying to get Riley to take his anti-sickness travel tablets . He has a knack of eating the "disguise" and spitting out the tablet .

I think they are describing my cat Dave. He is a shocker for tablets. Even disguised in every bit of meat known to man and cat he still finds the tablet and spits it out.

thank you; he is much happier today, and wonder of wonders is eating the adulterated cat food quite readily (provided I don't offer him an alternative !). Glad I chose this option !

Hi Everyone

 

 

That sounds like our 10 year old Boxer dog girl you can give her a tablet and you can find it any where in the house 1/2 an hour later but put it in a sandwich and it is eaten.

Poor girl because of her age and wee problems she has to have several tablets and medicine a day. But she is still with us and think she might make a nice grandma when Missy pups come in March.

I think I will follow the vet's advice and open the capsule up and attempt to disguise the powder in food.....

 

It's probably too late now, but my vet told me to keep the capsules in the fridge until you need to put them in the food, as it suppresses and smell the powder might have and the cat is more likely to eat it. It certainly worked with my boy!

Tubby Puddy is still on her diet, so would probably eat anything, but picky Loki is very good at detecting anything in his food and won't eat it at all (and then follows me round the place yowling because he's hungry ). Not that he's needed much by way of medication, but it's useful to know how to sneak it into him!

wont work with capsules, but with pills its good to rub them in a bit of smoked salmon before giving. The oil from the salmon stops it sticking in their mouth / throat and you can give them the salmon bit straight afterwards which makes them swallow

 

works for cats and dogs, but i'd suggest you get the smoked salmon off-cuts rather than the good stuff ... i love my pets but not that much

Thanks - i shall certainly try that as we still have 3 days to go and Fritz is definitely getting more suspicious. He quite often rejects the food and then tries it from a different side ( sidling up to it most strangely ) to see if that bit is better. its certainly the smell the puts them off. Thanks.

 

 

PS. does anyone else's cat try different sides of the house if its raining eg if its raining out of the front door, is it also wet out of the back door ? ....er, yes Fritz, ......

Oh yes , my cats believe there is different weather to be found out of each door and if that doesn't work try going out of a window, that might make it different .

Piper Kit sits in her bed (on the top of the fridge ) and watches a puddle when its raining, if the puddle stops moving she jumps out of bed - quite clever really
