Ginger is coughing and was very wheezy but the answer is ..

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

Ginger our ex battery hen has been coughing and was very wheezy a so had her to the vets. They told us that she had gape worm.

How to look for them is easy.... pardon you might say ... but this is how :- get a bright light torch and part the feathers on the neck, when the light is shone through the skin look for a moving black ring there you have it.

They did take a swob but nothing could be seen.

Medication is also needed to clear the problem, given ivermectin drops on her skin and baytril oral liquid antibiotic. She sounds much best but might need some more medication still a bit wheezy but not coughing.

We had wormed all the hens with flubenvet on the 20th January 2009 this does not say much for this product!!!

Was given panacur to worm that rest of the hens.

Hope this helps any of you who have a similar problems.

Best regards

That's very interesting. Maybe someone could add that to a Sticky.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I may have read on this forum that gape worm needs a double dose of Flubenvet (plus egg withdrawal) but hopefully someone can post and confirm/deny that.....??????

Hi

In answer to the comment regarding how many time that the Flubenvet should be used.

We did give it twice to our small flock (9) of hens.

Also we did with draw the eggs.

Hope this clarifies the original information given.

Best regards

Hi Everyone

My better half Valerie who is more medically minded than myself pointed out an error

I typed when typing the above.

I got confused you see I usually deal with the dogs then the children and finally the hens.

Valerie informs me that they were wormed for 7 Days with Flubenvet ( double dose).

We now have to worm them twice 2 weeks apart with Panacur that is what the vet prescribed, they will get their second dose next week.

We hope this clears up any misunderstanding I typed earlier.

Best regards,

Ian & Valerie

may I enquire "how " you dosed?

Did you do each chook individually or put double the dose daily in their food?

Is your flubenvet "in date" (I was given some so do do not know!)

You gave double dose "Flub" 7 days on Jan 20th, did she have symptoms then or were you just being cautious?

Also pre that when were they wormed & or was that "normal worming" or for gape.

and Finally.. how long have you had Ginger?

Sorry for lots of questions, all useful info to have.

Hi Everyone

In answer to the above questions here are the answers sorry in the delay but had to take our young son to Manchester Children Hospital on Friday 27/02/09 for a 2 day appointment.

1)

Wormed them individually via syringe mixed in water double dose as best as we could manage. Difficult for us to put in feed as the Batts will only eat mash and due to cold weather were eating a lot of hot mash to keep them warm.

We also put pellets out for the younger hybrids wrote names down & ticked off each hen , each day.

2)

Flubenvet bought new still in date checked before giving.

3)

Ginger had a pooey bottom, pale comb and very slow moving around. Also not much grass left in garden so easily to get contaminated from garden birds. Ginger only laid we think at the beginning. Rescued her last April 2008, hasn't laid since last Summer.

4)

It was difficult to get the dose right as we used to put it in warm/wet mash so the ex batts would eat it. Tried our best, but always withdraw the eggs as don't fancy anyone eating them, just in case!

5)

We have read Eglutine says" it should be mixed in with their pellets, but ours are so they get it gradually. Such a mixed bunch and so fussy. We just wanted to make sure they all got it.

Think we use panacur because that way we will feel confident and happy that they all have the correct dose and will withdraw the eggs anyway.

Flubavet is very haphazard we still have a big tub left!!!

All our 3 ex batteries are not too healthy and only the thread bare only " Tango " lays

most day's, thin shelled large eggs, but they seem happy and have had almost a year free. We hope that they all survive this winter and get an other summer to enjoy.

Hope this answers all the questions that have been asked.

Best regards

my goodness. i think I would be inclined to talk to the makers.

That doesn't sound very encouraging does it?

If you had added it to the food, (like you thought )I would have thought perhaps the said chook hadn't got the full dose, but sounds like you couldn't have got it done better. I hadn't thought about syringinging it I must say. I use the grape method & feel that each chook gets a "good" dose......well I DID before reading your post :!:
