The chickens are here!!!!

Recommended Posts

Well, we picked up our five new girlies from Cambridge. They all travelled together beautifully in our dog crate with a blanket over it and we trasnferred them to the ark very easily. However ............. one of our dogs ignored them completed and is not the least bit interested. The other one Pete just wants them for dinner :( We ended up having to crate the chickens again and move the ark down much nearer the house so that we could keep an eye on things. On the plus side the hens do not seem at all bothered about Pete and were eating and picking around in a pretty relaxed way. As dusk fell none of them made any effort to get up into their roost so I crawled in, Dave (hubby) shut me in and one by one I got them up the ladder (hopefully the neighbours weren't watching) They are all now nice secure. Pete has lost interest because he can't see any hens and tomorrow is another day!! Hopefully it won't be too long before Pete gets used to the new members of our family.

Adam at Cambridge Poultry was extremely helpful and I would thoroughly recommend this place for purchasing chickens - we have had a lovely day out and once the dog situation is sorted all will be well. I can't wait to let them all out in the morning again. :D

Congratulations on your new girls!!

OH and I have 2 labs who are fine with the chickens and all free range in the front garden together (not the bantees though who have their own domain in the back garden). Every dog seems different - I think the thing is to take it very easy in the early days - introduce the dogs to the girls on a lead and don't leave them alone with the new members of your family until you are certain they are not eying them up as their next meal

Good luck though :)

Thanks everyone. One chicken came out this morning - my Nera which is slightly older than the rest and seems to be trying to show them the way. However, she has now found her way back up again so I will probably have to help them all out in a bit if they don't manage it themselves.

Will sort out my signature later, yes, we have names for them all already

I have the family over for dinner today so I guess I might be demostrating the "crawling around in the run" manoevure again tonight!!

Amazing day, Pete, the dog, has calmed down with the new hens, we have had an egg and they have all put themselves to bed tonight :D:D:D With any luck they will all get down the ladder in the morning without a helping hand  I just love these chickens!
