hilda-and-evadne
Just to say that my new flock arrived this week from Wernlas. The Exchequer Leghorn was an afterthought, and I wondered if I had made a mistake because from the outset she singled out the Maran, Becassine, for special torment. Becassine's tail is already looking mangled so this morning I put a bumper bit on the Leghorn (not yet named). To do it, I sat on an upturned bucket in the run, with the hen wrapped in a towel between my knees, so that the others could witness the bully being humbled. Am so relieved to have managed to get the bit on her - I read that Leghorns don't like being handled, and she screamed blue murder at first. Hilda and Evadne are much missed but I guess that you never forget your first hens.

hilda-and-evadne
Thank you, everyone. I have really missed having hens these past three months or so, although it wouldn't have been much fun tending them during the sno-o-o-o-w we had. Lovely girls and good photos. Mine always look the other way. A lot of photos were deleted before I managed to catch any with their heads up! I am always interested in how other people chose names for their hens. The name for the Light Sussex, Bertha (or Berthe), was inspired by a painting, "The Butterfly Hunt" that has in the foreground a lady in a white dress and black lace shawl. As Marans came from France, that suggested the name Bécassine; looking at the Legbar and her crest, in my mind's eye I could see one of those 1920s fashion plates of impossibly tall women in gowns and feathers and seemed to go with Tallulah; I chose Zaza for the naughty Leghorn in the hope that she will live up to it.
