Ain't Nobody Here
Our new turf lawn has been down a week now. I've been trying to read up on lawn care (having never cared for our old lawn ) and am getting a bit muddled. Should I be watering it now even if there's a chance of frost? Should I be mowing it? Some sites say within days of it being laid, others when growth is obvious. I'm confused . Has anyone got experience of this?
Valkyrie
I would water it, but don't worry about mowing yet, try and keep off it for a while longer. Long time since our lawns were done. One of them has since been dug up again for veg beds! Just checked in our book - says that you can pull a roller over it after a week, so perhaps you can walk on it after all. Maybe get the chickens to mow it for you?
Olly
I'd ring that hunky gardener up and ask for some advice ... maybe a return visit? Sorry, don't know the answer, never had a new lawn.
Redwing
I laid a lawn at our last house (it was three circles and looked soooo ) anyhoo.... It needs a lot of water but not if the water is going to freeze so water it in the morning if at all possible (not when there is frost on the ground though) that will give it time to drain so its not soggy when the sun goes down and the temp drops. If it does freeze don't walk on it, you could get damaged patches if you do! If watering first thing isnt possible try to water really well at the weekend and try to get out there once or twice in the week when the weather forecast seems ok The trouble with mowing it is that you will need to tread all over it (HG will no doubt have told you not to do cartwheels on it for a while??) It won't be growing tons at the moment so leave it a couple of weeks till growth is obvious then cut it on the longest setting on your mower (if you can set the blades)
Ain't Nobody Here
Thanks . No, HG didn't leave me with any advice - apart from "don't let the chickens on it" . So we have been walking on it a bit . Hope we haven't damaged it . It's raining at the moment ( ) so fingers crossed it carries on all day . I'll try to get the hose set up and give it a water tomorrow morning. I was on a lawn website which gives you dates of final/first frosts if you give your location - our last frost will be in April . I've gathered that I mustn't use any fertilizer or weedkiller for about 6 months but I don't know what to do if I spot a weed . Cut it out I suppose? Redwing
Tbh would you have heard any advice while you were looking at his legs? You shouldnt damage the lawn by walking on it but you can cause little dips which will make it harder to mow later on so keeping off it in the early days is a good idea. You can get a 'spot' weedkiller, it looks a bit like a big marker pen that you can use on individual weeds or you can also get a hand weed remover which is a little handle attached to a rod (about a foot long) that you can get long tap rooted weeds out with If you look after it hopefully it should be so thick and healthy it should crowd out any major weeds
