alskals
Hello everyone I recently lost our 3 hens to a fox and will be getting some new ones in a few weeks. I previously have had hybrids and found that after a couple of years their egg production is virtually over. I was wondering whether if I got 3 pure- bred hens their egg production would be less per year but last over a longer period than 2 years. Has anyone experience of any particular breeds that lay for longer and that fit in an eglu? Thanks very much for any replies. We have had our eglu for over 3 years now and love it! Daphne
Some of my orps and polands are in their 3rd year of lay. The polands now tend to lay every other day rather than every day but they started about 4-6 weeks ago. The orp has just started back but shes currently every day more or less. Last year she laid from now right round to the end of Sept. In general, pure breeds aren't much good at winter laying - except silkies. I think (but not sure) some of the Sussex (partic Light Sussex) might also be quite good at it.
