tania
Diana & Aretha have been laying for about 5 days now and are producing the most wonderful eggs . I don't think Martha will be long off starting either. Should I be giving them anything in addition to their normal feed? They have layers pellets which they love and free range all the time. They have a handful of corn in the early evening as a treat but nothing else. They don't like lettuce, cabbage, etc and I've tried everything. C&T
Don't the eggs just taste fantastic!! Nothing like collecting them each day! They will have everything they need with what they already have, but if you want to give them some treats, just keep trying different things. They will learn to like different things. Trial and error really. The first couple of times they had cabbage, I had to boil it for a minute or two until soft (I put a whole cabbage in the saucepan for a couple of mins, so outer leaves soft) - now they have learnt to eat it raw. They have only just decided to eat grapes, and have been laying for 4 months now. Mine loved sweetcorn on first try - just cheap frozen sweetcorn, defosted though! And spinach might be a good one if not tried before? And melon pips for some reason...!! They will decide to eat more things - just a case of keep on trying!! The Dogmother
The pellets will contain everything that they need to lay eggs. Some poeple give them treats, but be careful to feed treats only in the late afternoon when they have eaten most of the pellets, or you'll have fat hens who won't lay eggs You can add various supplements to the feed if you like, but it's not compulsory... garlic powder, Bokashi Bran, limestone flour, seaweed/kelp. quickcluck
You will find that their appetite will increase hugely so make sure you are putting out extra pellets for them....... Techically they dont need extras, but we all love to feed them bits, so they can have whatever you choose in the afternoons, so they eat what they should pelletwise in the mornings or they will fill up on sweeties You may also find their taste buds change so keep trying them with different stuff. Mine hated broccoli at first and not cant get enough of it!! They also so like lettuce, cabbage, brussels and melon (including the seeds!) I also make mine a bit of pellet porridge in the afternoons as a treat and add some porridge oats or weetabix and they scoff it up in seconds
