Hi I'm new but my chicken looks poorly - please help

Recommended Posts

Hi, we have just bought a (pink eglu) on friday with 4 hens. The previous owner was moving aboard. 2 are GNR , 1 is PP and the other is a snowey white.

They are all laying and the GNR 's and PP look very happy however the snowey white does not. She has yellow loose poo as well, what can I do to help her?

It could just be the move that has unsettled her a bit. Chickens do yellow runnier poo every 10 or so, so it may just be normal. Live yogurt is good for poorly tums and you can try mixing some in with her food.

Keep an eye on her and if she shows any other signs of ill health i'd pop her to the vets.

Thank-you for your reply. I have taken to a local farm that sells and breeds poultry. They also felt it was just the stress of the move so I got her some pick -me up feed and also some anti-biotics to be on the safe side. Hoping that will do the trick!!

Yellow poo does seem to be connected with new /recently moved chickens, it has been mentioned on here that it can persist for up to two weeks but most settle down after a few days to a week

Just keep an eye on her

Congratulations on your new girls :D

Welcome to the forum, Sally :D . I agree with the others, it's no doubt just the move that's upset her tum :) .

They do a huge range of shapes & sizes (& smells :vom: ) of poo which you'll get used to over time! Giving them bokashi bran helps to firm up the poos, reduces smells & aids their digestion. Garlic powder (from a horsey supplies place) will also reduce the smell of the poo and is good for them too.

Did the farm give you the antibiotics? And or where did you get it and which anti biotic is it.

Wondering as like us it is prescription only? therefore should be given by a vet???

I wouldn't give antibiotics - might make matters worse. Are you in the UK?

I would keep her on pellets and water only, with just some live probiotic yoghurt or a probiotic additive to the water such as Avipro.

If you can get hold of some Bokashi Bran, a little mixed with her pellets will help clear up the squitts.
