Nest box Update 29th June 2009

Recommended Posts

Quick update.

Difficult to get pictures as the tits have grown so much and seem to have disappeared into the nest.

There are definitely six hungry gapes. Weather has been so bad I've been putting out mealworms.

Here mum has just dropped in a bee brought by dad. It was promptly regurgitated and she took it out eventually.

Sparrows are almost ready to go. Parents are hanging on the entry hole waving mealworms at the youngsters and calling them out.

We're all on magpie watch here as the little expletive deleted know what's going on and are hanging round the nest. I've seen them snatch fledgelings in the past.

Just a quick update.

So many nestlings made photos impossible.

We thought at least six then eight and maybe even nine.

I will have to get a nest box camera with a much wider angle lens next year :!:

I've been away but hubby watched 10 ..... YES10 :!::!::!: chicks fledge in an hour last Tuesday. He kept them amply supplied with mealworms and mum and dad fed them all in the branches of our silver birch for five days before they disappeared. I'm quite sorry to have missed them but spent a few days with my own fledgling in London. Empty nest looks so desolate :(

Mrs Sparrow is sitting on her second batch of four.

Phew!! This is all too much for me.

Last lot of sparrows fledged last week, two babies on Thursday and three on Friday.

I spotted Mum and Dad in flagrante in the nestbox this morning.

It's costing me a fortune in mealworms :roll:

Now hubby is looking at plans to build two swift boxes for next year. You can buy a CD of swift calls to attract them to your boxes .... all very technical.

We don't get swifts this far out of town as there are too few buildings but we do see them hunting here. I do miss them. When I lived in London they were a great herald of summer.
