S-l-o-o-o-w laying

Recommended Posts

My Miss pepperpot takes an age to lay. She`s in the nest for ages and it`s getting longer - up to two hours now. My other hen, a gingernut, lays before I let them out so I don`t know how long she takes.

I keep thinking she`s going to brood but when I lift her off the nest she`s very cross, "What IS your problem? Leave me alone." and she leaves the nest when she has laid. The egg is still warm so I know it`s just happened. She`s normal in every other way.

Am I being neurotic?

Hi ya,

She could be semi-broody like ours sometimes get :shameonu: . They lay their egg then they like to turn it and sit on it a while before leaving the nest. It will still be slightly warm even if it was laid a while ago as long as they keep sitting on it. It's quite annoying isn't it, especially if you are waiting for it to go with your bacon or if you are going out :lol: I've sometimes rattled the corn tub to get them off the nest so I can get the egg, then given them a little.

I've got 2 of my chooks that do that  Rocky and Specs take an age in the nest and will pull any other eggs in the nest underneath them. They will sit there for a while even if I've taken the eggs away! Rocky also has a balding underneath :o

They must only be semi-broody as they will move of their own volition after a couple of hours for the rest of the day.

It causes a bit of annoyance from the others when they want to lay their eggs. Eventually they'll give up waiting politely and will climb in on top if necessary
