Vet put Sunlfower to sleep today.

Recommended Posts

Hello

We had to have our Cuckoo Maran, Sunflower, put to sleep today. She'd been off colour since Friday (well, longer than that in retrospect) and turns out she had an egg lodged in her oviduct and was full of pus and infection (sorry, too much info!). Vet said she wouldn't have survived much longer. She was in a sorry state this morning, just lying in the box that we'd been keeping her in over the weekend. I was glad when the vet said he would put her to sleep as she had suffered enough.

Our other hen Blossom seems to be missing her a bit (despite having bullied her mercilessly at first) so we 're keen to get a replacement. In fact, we think we'll get two replacements as we don't want to be left with one chicken again.

If it wasn't for the fact that Blossom is so obviously thriving, I would be worried about our abilities as chicken keepers as we've only had them just over a fortnight, but I guess these things happen.

Anyway, thanks for your answers to my sick chiken questions on previous posts!

Thanks for all your kind words and sorry to hear about your chickens Sandy.

We're going to get two new hens this afternoon - Warrens. They're slightly older than POL age so will be a better match for Blossom who is about 7 months old.

My partner has taken the day off work to sort out a second run for the new ones. The things we do for chickens! We're hoping that we should be able to put them all in the Eglu to sleep, if not, the newbies will go in the garage (minus the car and well ventilated!).

Just need two new names now!
