guineas in eglu advice

Recommended Posts

Hi, never been in the GP forum before - so here is my idiot question, I just purchased a eglu with chicken base and longer chook run (for intros and possible hatch at some point) - So I have taken out the roosting bars and have been putting the pigs in it during the day.

What if any are the disavantages? It has a winter cover over the top of it and I have attached waterboottles to the run and put in their food bowl and wee hidey wooden thing.

I'm thinking it is okay - but maybe I am missing something? Will the GPs damage the chicken dropping tray, does it make it less secure with the roosting bars out.

all advice help appreciated, by me and pig-pig and cannon-ball (guess who named the GPs)

Hi Susie

I think your g-pigs will be fine in the eglu in the summer. You can buy an adapted base for an eglu - but I'm not sure how this differs from the droppings tray.

I'm sure the eglu is just as secure without the roosting bars - they are just resting on the tray.

The only problem with eglus and g-pigs is during the winter - search this forum and you will read the arguments each way. I personally don't think they are warm enough in the winter for g-pigs. Hens are much more hardy and that is what the eglu was designed for.

However, if you bring them inside/ in a shed over winter they will be fine.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, just wondered if it was secure enough - the G-pigs will come back inside around September/October I think. - they were house pigs anyway, I got the eglu to think about maybe hatching with a broody hen - but was trying the pigs in it - not 100% sure about hatching so will leave the pigs in it for now.

thanks again.
