My chickens were dustbathing today and making little purring sounds like a soft growl. Is this normal? Were they just happy?

Ours croon gently to themselves when happy - and Phillip makes a " clicking sound" when he finds a tasty patch of something to tell his ladies to come on over and share. Who says all they do is cluck?

yes they do make weird clicking and purring sounds.

have you aLL noticed the different tones? my gone girl used to do the higher pitch like miow to and there was this real high pitch almost screaming purr when her friend got stuck upstairs, don't know if she was answereing something we hadn't heard or calling her back!

I love it when they make their little purring noise....they make it when they are very content and it is so lovely to know they are happy little monkeys.

 

Mine tend to do it most when dustbathing, sunbathing and when they are in the nest box they sometimes make a little pur.

Hens are amazingly musical (making lovely sounds, some like a muted trumpet) and also so unselfconsciously making squarking sounds that are harsh or unmelodious.

 

It is as though they have the capacity to preen themselves in front of a mirror while at the same time not caring what they look like.

 

We humans should be so lucky!

Fred is seldom quiet... She talks to herself most of the day! She wanders around the garden, making all sorts of different noises depending what she finds / what she is thinking about. The only time she goes quiet is if she finds a worm, and doesn't want Ginger to eat it before she has a chance.

 

Unfortunately Ginger has learnt that if Fred goes quiet, she should go and check out why the chatter has stopped... Poor girl!

Sam whines to herself and to me to let her out or give her food.

 

Dipper, however is the most noisy - she chats away to herself most of the day.

 

I was watching a program last night about people who lived with pigs for four days and they learned what each pig noise meant and were having mini conversations with them. I wonder if there is a website which explains chicken chat?

My girls purr too . I love to hear it. I first heard it coming out of the nest box when Lilly was layng an egg, I was very , when I realised what it was. Most of them do it when sunbathing though. They get some funny looks from my cats
