Jules.
Today my 12 Light Sussex chicks went to their new home while they grow on, safe from my predatory cats- who I must admit didn't really take any notice of the chicks while they were here But, YS needs his bedroom back, & I need my bed back as he has been sharing with us the last few nights, as it was not suitable fro him to sleep in the same room as the chicks, not least because of the heat in there Anyhow, I am desparate to get my 4 chicks home soon, & want them back at about 6/7 weeks, but need Omleteers advice. Do you think that at that age they will be ok in the eglu? Is it too soon? They will have to share with the bantams, & I have read its not a good idea to put chicks on soil that has already ahs poultry on it, but that's not an option for me. The eventual plan is to put them in the WIR with the big girls, but of course that will only happen when they are about 19 weeks old. I hope to get 2 boys & 2 girls, but may not be able to sex them at such a young age?
Griffin
Oh you definitely will be able to sex them I've known since about five weeks what my Light Sussex chicks are. The boys get their head gear sooner.
Egluntyne
I'm not sure it will be safe to put them with the bantams, as they will attack them. I'll lend you an Eglu on Sat if you like.
The Dogmother
You really can't put them in with the others at that age Jules, it takes ages to integrate them, even with a mummy hen to look after them. Dunno why, but I thought I read that you'd got housing for them sorted
Jules.
Thanks for the replies. I suppose I'll have to wait till they are bigger now before I bring them home. I can't put the bantams in with the big girls in 6 weeks time, as the LS will live in the WIR when they are bigger. Thanks Egluntine for the offer of an eglu borrow, but I think you're a bit too far away, so I'll see if I can get a rabbit hutch from freecyle in the mean time. The Dogmother
A rabbit hutch will be a good idea Jules.
poachedegg
Jules, I am selling my eglu, however I can take it off sale and you can lend it if you like and I'll just sell it when you've finished with it, if that helps? Just noticed you are offline so have text you.
Jules.
Thank you alih & poachedegg, they are very kind offers Alih since Adrienne is closer geographically to me I wolud like to take her up on her offer, but thank you very much for your offer of an eglu loan, it's very kind, as is Egluntines. Poachedegg are you really sure? I may need to keep it until September when the chicks will be 20 weeks old?
poachedegg
Not a problem at all. Would you be collecting it Saturday (only it needs a jet wash!)?
Jules.
There's no rush at my end, it will be about 7 weeks before it wil be needed But if you want it off your hands on Saturday, & while there will be lots of room in my car ( ie only me!) then I can collect it, but don't feel you need to clean it, I can do that! poachedegg
You are quite welcome to take it Saturday and it makes sense if you have all that room in the car.........(and I wanted it out of the way by next week as it is Dan's 18th and as he is having a party at ours, I wanted the garden to look neat and saves OH having to clear a space in the garage. ) You could leave your car at ours and OH could load it up whilst we're out and we could go to B's in mine. feemcg
You may not need it till they're 20 weeks Jules.....I put mine in with the big girls at about 12-14 weeks and have never had any bother.
