Falkor
Just been giving the girls the once over as they are due to be wormed and EEEEEEEEWWWWKKK I think I have found lice! I feel so bad! They are cleaned out once a week, diatom is sprinkled in the nest box but still we have them. Gin has egg clusters at the base of some of her feathers...what do I do? Is a dusting with Diatom sufficient to get rid of them or is something more drastic required? Also if the WIR has aubiose down should I remove it all and put fresh in? Ain't Nobody Here
I remember that feeling of horror . I bought some Johnson's Anti Mite (or Lice?) Spray from Pets at Home (rather than wait for an internet delivery ). I tried to remove the eggs but they stick like concrete so I had ES hold Milly and I snipped the feathers off as close to the skin as I could. There were only 4 or 5 feathers affected. You have to dispose of 3 days of eggs (I think) but one treatment worked. (I think I sprayed the others too.)
ClaireG
I've just had this problem. I made sure i gave the Eglu and my wooden coop an extra good sprinkling with red mite powder (it helps with lice to). I also put some in their dustbath as well as the usual Diatom i put in. I then got some Johnsons spray and gave them all a quick spray with that for a couple of days. It seems to have worked.
Ain't Nobody Here
Oops, forgot to say that I didn't change the Hemcore but think I squirted Johnsons into the eglu after I'd cleaned it. I usually brush Diatom everywhere after a clean too.

Redwing
Don't breathe in the Johnsons spray - it makes your tongue go numb
Egluntyne
Don't forget to withdraw the eggs for a couple of days as the product isn't licensed for use in poultry.
Budgies
I was embarrassed that when I took my chooks to the vet last week, one of them had lice (how not both I've no idea!) even though I'm really meticulous. The vet said it's something that's very hard to eradicate completely and the weekly dusting with diatom and barrier powder tends to just limit infestations. As far as I understand it, they get lice from wild birds so it's not your fault! I'm surprised your vet said that . I treated my hen who had them and she's not had them since (and the others didn't get them at all ).
Falkor
Well I got the Johnsons spray yesterday and gave the Old Speckled Hen a squirt last night...on close inspection tonight I haven`t found any creepy crawlies but she got another squirt anyways. Tonight they have all had a dose and Gin has Lice too AT LAST i have been able to get hold of Fizz!!! She is SO skitty but once I had her she stayed in my arms quite content Snowball and Fizz seem to be lice free, I checked vent, under wings and back of neck and saw no creepy crawlies and no eggs at the base of the feathers! They got a squirt anyways. I assumed if OSH had them then all four of them would have but it seems to be just the Orps Now that they have all had a dose should I stop or do I continue for another couple of days? We had three eggs today.....two were softies so don`t feel do back about them going down the waste disposal

I was embarrassed because I knew my girls had lice and I'd been trying to treat it but what I was using wasn't clearing the infestation. My vet was very understanding and said my hens were well-looked after and in good condition apart from their medical complaints that suddenly came on. Palmer, I'm sorry for the thread hijack! I'm glad you managed to spray your girls and will watch this thread with interest - it would be great to have something on standby for when I get my new ladies, and hopefully this time something that actually works! Good luck!
Falkor
Just been out to check the girls and had a good look at all four of them and I and VERY HAPPY to report that we seem to be lice FREE!!!!! The Johnsons spray is the best £4 I have ever spent!!! Thought it would take a while for the little beasties to dissapear but it seems to be sorted already! Blooming typically we got have been getting double yolkers from Snowball for the last two days and can`t eat them! Thanks for your help everyone! One last question...if they were all sprayed Thursday when can I start eating the eggs again?
