fluffyknickers
i would like to buy a mandolin and wondered if you have one are they any good and which one do you have? Thanks michelle
moochoo
We have a V slicer and I use it every day. It cuts way thinner than I can with a knife and also dices and slices. It's great for making coleslaw and potato gratins...yum.
Cinnamon
I have had one for about 12 years, but am terrified of it & have only used it once That one time, I managed to remove the end of my finger & it has languished in a cupboard ever since (the mandolin, not the finger!) Its one of those things that as I have not used it,I can't bear to get rid of, although it makes me shudder whenever I see it *chants - must be braver, must be braver*
Blackrocksrock
Bit like Cinnamon on this one - give me sharp knife and I will cut myself so a Mandolin gives me the creeps!
craftyhunnypie
Lethal things! - finger slicers. Better a sharp knife or a food processor, where the blades are out of the way! The mandolin went years ago! Emma.x
bigmommasally
I've got one that I bought at the Ideal Home show a few years back. It is good but you must always use the hand guard otherwise it can be lethal. I only use it if I'm slicing veg or salad for a special occassion though as I can't be bothered to get it out of its box each time. If I had a food processor that sliced then I wouldn't ever use it. fluffyknickers
Thanks everyone. I know they can be dangerous with fingers but thought I would be ok with the guard on - is it still really dangerous? Been looking at the Zyliss one and the Oxo good grips (and a couple in lakeland). I would like a food processor (think the only gadget I dont have ) however my main thinking was space (very small kitchen with no moe room on worktops unless got rid of breadmaker and put it there). I didnt know if it would be a nightmare to clean (the food processor) more than a mandoline type cutter/slicer would be? I would like it to prepare vegetable like onions (after making onion marmalade the other day and chopped for ages!) and carrots and grate stuff and fruit etc. When you say food processor assume you mean one like this http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/catalogId/1500001501/partNumber/4200679.htm Thanks for all your help. fluffyknickers
I do have a Kenwood hand blender for liquidising and puree-ing stuff and a mini chopper too that I just keep out for stuff like breadcrumbs, ginger, garlic etc but I am looking for something that slices more than chops or blends so that you get slices of onion or carrot or courgette - if that makes sense!!! Just have to double check when I get home that its one that is compatible then I am away!!! Anyone else got this?

Egluntyne
I have one of those Emma....it is great. Irritatingly, I dropped the clear plastic bit and it broke, so I've just bought another one via Ebay. I have a mandolin gathering dust in the garage too. Used it once and nearly took my thumb off. fluffyknickers
Still waiting for Kenwood to confirm I can use that attachment on my Kenwood (I am sure I can just want to confirm). I too have the pampered chef chopper and LOVE IT. Great for making baby dinners and use it when I am doing spag bol for kids. x
