Help with Broody Bantam

Recommended Posts

I don't know if anyone can help me, but one of our bantams keeps going broody. She first went broody about a month ago, and after a week in the sin bin she went back to her normal self, then about 4 days later went broody again and has been like it for nearly three weeks. We've tried everything, she spent about 8 days in the sin bin (a small cage which she is lifted off the floor in so the cool air circulates around her), we then let her out and she ran straight back to the coop and fluffed herself up  . Last night we even resorted to the dunking her in a bucket of cold water, but even that didn't stop her!! :wall:

Has anybody got any ideas how to snap her out of it, other than serving her on the BBQ on Sunday!! (It really is getting that close to doing it!!!!)

Many thanks.

Wendy

Nooooo don't let anyone else see this thread - they'll say get some chicks! :D

My Buff Orpi was the same. She was so determined. I wrapped up freezer blocks in old towels to cool her down, but she just kicked them to the side. The sin bin thread (I'm not sure whether it was surferdog) came too late for me. Being a relative newbie I didn't recognise the early signs. I just let her to it - even if it did cause arguments for the nest box - and then we made one of her own which was left in the cube run.

The other two get the odd moments and the Splash Orpie has been doing this today - I've shut the cube door so she now has the hump. It'll probably be the Blue Orps turn tomorrow.

I think you will have to ride out the storm. Get some pretend eggs, let her sit on those and when they don't hatch after 21 days or so, she will realise that they aren't going to hatch and hopefully snap out of it - haven't done that yet, but it's worth a try. Just let her eat corn to keep her going if she isn't eating during the day.

Good luck

Im afraid there is no hope with some chickens :notalk: , my girls are hardened broodies and will not snap out of it for love nor money so I just let them be, it is very frustrating (especially with 2 at the same time :wall: ).

I close the cube door when no one is laying so they cant "nest" and I make them get up every time they go "pancake" in the garden, sometimes I do squirt them (very gently) with the garden hose :anxious: if I see them broody in the garden. Some times I think my girls are fibbing as they still eat and preen etc, but still make all the noise and characteristics of a broody.
