Has anyone done any OU courses?

We've been given the chance to do a module at school, and they have funding for a lot of us to do it, even better

The website seems ok, if not a bit confusing  .

Just wondered if anyone has done one and how you got on?

Always good to hear good things!

We had to choose a Level 1 course worth 10 points, so I've asked if I can do

SK185 - Molecules, medicines and drugs: a chemical story, which is about how medicines treat different parts of the body (there's something about Bird Flu in it ) or if not,

S180 - Life in the oceans: exploring our blue planet, which is all based on the BBC programmes.

I have done my degree with the OU, they supply great course materials and the course forums are very good. As well as my degree I did a science short course (10 points) on genetics, this was great very interesting and not at all stressful, I think I will do another 10 pointer as I actually miss the studying :!: (can't quite believe I am saying that).

Go for it, especially if you have got funding, I also like the sound of SK185 but have also thought about a Shakepeare one.

Ooh, was it SK195 - Human genetics and health issues ?

I looked at doing that one, but thought the medicine would be better for me. I'm still waiting to hear from school to see when were being registered but people on other courses registered last Friday and had their course info to start on Tuesday.

Yes it was SK195, it was very interesting, not that hard but then I used to be a nurse so had done a lot of the science.

Good Luck with your choice

Did you do the 10 week, or 5 month course?

I don't know how its decided, as some people have been told they need to submit theirs by July, and others have been told we can wait and do it during the summer after our exams.

and thanks :D

I did it over 5 months, initially I intended to do it in 12 weeks. You get 2 submission dates, if you can't do it in 12 weeks you just submit at the later date. You can always buy the books etc on ebay before and work towards it if the start date is later than you hoped, just be careful that they haven't updated the course materials (this shouldn't be as much of a problem for the shorter courses).

I did my Masters (MEd) with the OU and really enjoyed it. You got to meet people from all over and I still keep in touch with some of them. Some modules were better than others and some tutors better but that's always the way with any course.

The materials were great though and I often find myself looking at their website to see if I fancy doing any more (for fun). In fact I pre-registered to learn Welsh a few months back, but then cancelled it because I couldn't afford it; but one day....

None of mine is residential schooling, so I won't meet anyone I don't think. I've heard a lot of good things about the tutors though :)

I got the forms and letters from school today, so I'll get them all filled in and sent off tomorrow :D

I've done a couple of courses with the OU and found them very good. I did a one week residential in Caen as part of a French course and it was excellent. The only small criticism I would make ( and it is very small) is that some aspects of some courses are a bit "right on" if you know what I mean.....which I think can be a little off-putting at times...

I am the proud holder of a BSC in Natural Sciences with Chemistry from the OU and a Diploma in Chemsitry from them - I couldn't recommend them enough!

Good luck :)

Thankyou

I'll know who to ask if I have a problem with the Chemistry then :lol:

Update:

School applied for it today (closes on Friday), and they said its sold out :?

They registered me for Life in the oceans: exploring our blue planet (S180), which I was interested in, but convinced myself the other course looks better

It should still be good though, and they send you the BBC's Blue Planet DVD's to watch.

I'm doing T183 Design and the Web (a need for Ms Technonumpty here). I'm finding it very interesting and well put together, most of the materials are online or CD, so the paper use is minimal. I'm also finding it easy to follow and I've already submitted my mid-course assignment even though the deadline is not until 15 June. It's so exciting!

As I'm now employed by the OU I get the course's fee paid for, which is one of the nicest perks of the job - I love learning new things! I'm aiming to get a Certificate by doing 6 web related courses over the next couple of years. I'd also love to learn Italian and Chinese (brand new course starting this autumn!)

Thanks for all your good comments about my new employer. It's a really nice place to work and there are rather a few chicken keepers here too!

A few of my friends are doing that one. Looks quite good.

I like that its all "coursework" and no exams.
