Lame duck - help please

Recommended Posts

One of my ducks has been limping today, and has a swollen toe. I don't want to go running to the vet if it's something I can fix myself, but I was hoping someone with more experience could advise me. Poor Judy is limping around and standing on one leg.

There are no cuts on the foot that I can see, so I was thinking it might actually be broken. Photos below. She's a Welsh Harlequin, about a year old.

Hi Gem

I just read your posting- poor Judy. While I am very new to ducks and so cannot help you much, I have given limping chickens arnica tablets, extra calcium and kept them warm and quiet for a few days. Like I say, Im new to this so have no clue if this would work the same for ducks.

Hi Gem - I can't help much either.

Is she eating and drinking and otherwise OK? - if so then I would bathe the whole foot in some warm water with a few drops of tea-tree oil added, in case there is a scratch you can't see, and then see how she goes for a few days. If it doesn't settle down then either contact a vet or ask on the Practical Poultry forum as they have a clinic area.

Is it hot to touch?

She could have a little thorn or splinter in it which has made it swollen. Have a feel of it and move it, compare it to the other toes, if you can feel a crunching it could be a break and she will need to see the vet.

(Good names by the way )

Hi

ducks are really prone to foot /leg injuries, especially the heavier breeds, that does look quite a hot lump.

Agree with all the other responses may need to be seen at the vet, just put the duck in a box and take it along. They may give antibiotic/antiinflammatory.. just try to get it to rest.

I am sure they will be happy to see your duck(makes a change from the usual dogs and cats etc)

If you can keep it on its own to rest the limb, but as long as it can see the others should be happy.

Good luck indie :|
