Getting paranoid now.

Recommended Posts

The early morning noise recently has been playing on my mind. Doesn't help when OH snores and I have been up since 5 for the last few days. The girls seem to have sorted themselves out - taken the hint more like - and are back to normal timing. Again this morning I am up and can hear a strange noise. I have zipped to the back door, put my ear against the glass - but all I can hear is the blackbirds and other morning chorus birdies - very nice, but I'd rather be asleep. Found the source - OH is STILL snoring and it sounds just like a whining chicken! I am so not amused!

You are not alone so don`t worry.

I added extra darkening measures to the cube a few days ago as my lovely little ladies had taken to squwaking at 5.30  The cube looks a state with a tarp, a winter shade and about 57 bungees on it but it seems to have quietened them down well at least until Snowball lays her egg (a whopping 90g this am so I will forgive her the muffled shriek  )

Even though the girls are probably quite happily snoozing until 7.30 I have been awake since 5am listening...........and like you every little noise that i THINK i hear i THINK is a chicken  This morning I was up and hanging out the bedroom window at 6am trying to convince Oscar, my tabby cat to "STEP AWAY FROM THE CUBE" using just a stern look and my seemingly non existent magic mind powers.

OH is still upstairs snoring his head off and has the other woman in his life, Midge the cat, snuggled up next to him. She is snoring too

I know what you mean !!

I seem to have won (Should't have said that should I  ) the battle against early morning shouting by covering the eglu til a reasonable hour. However I am sure I can hear the girls shouting all through the day and have to run and check (water pistol in hand of course) or mute the tv but I find most of the time its in my head :lol: I'm definitely paranoid.

:lol::lol: Oh dear, double whammy for you then!

All quite with the girls. I'll probably oversleep in the morning and all hell will be let loose. The black plastic has certainly helped a lot.

I'm going to put out some citronella rags now - that's my next step on the paranoid rung - which sits alongside poo smells (even though I know it is from the farm wafting across on the breeze).

If his lordship does it again tonight you'll see me on the news being arrested for smothering my husband with a pillow!

I had the fly paranoia a few weeks ago and added Citronella rags too roof of WIR and a couple tied to the Omlet fence but my neighbour a couple of doors down said she had lots of midgies in her garden too so I think it is just the weather etc.

I did purchase some fly stickers like these http://www.townandcountryhardware.co.uk/product.asp?P_ID=810 and stuck them to the roof and have caught lots of the little beasties! :D

Bokashi, garlic powder and daily poo pick seems to solve poo smells here but i am sure you have all those measures in place already.

My OH is snoring AGAIN! and Midge the cat is snuggled up next to him  I did take a pic but it is not really suitable for the family forum

I bury the eglu and run under 2 tarps ( one black) and a rug so Phillip doesn't wake everyone till at least 7.30 but wonder if it's ABSOLUTELY necessary as I met ANOTHER neighbour this morning who said how nice it was to hear him - it made her think she was in the country. Should I really bother about all the fuss each night??

Hi Tricia - I know this isn't what you want to hear - but I think you probably should bother. I am very impressed that you go to so much trouble :D . My mother-in-law, who lives in Normandy (and yes, I know that they have a different attitude to chickens/ general country noises in France) lives right next door to some people who have 2 roosters. And they crow at 3am. And at 4am. And at 5 am. And at 6am - and then for about every 15 minutes for the rest of the day.

Chicken noises are lovely. Not sleeping an entire night's sleep all summer isn't.

I am not sure how much she has tried to reason with the neighbours (I don't think the chickens are closed in at all) - she's very much a "don't rock the boat" kind of person. However, these are the neighbours who shouted at us when we honked the horn at their cat, to try to get him to move, when he was sitting in the middle of the road...

I have put a couple of covers over the eglu and taken to locking the door, seems to keep them quiet until 6.30 or 7.00 now. If I leave the door open thought they are up by 5.30 :x

But I have to say that at at 4.30 it is just getting light now and is a real treat to watch the sun come up, with a coffee, either having just come in or just going out again on yet another call. :!:

Sorry I haven't answered - these blooming notifications not getting through. We are back to normal chickenwise with regard to early mornings. The black plastic definitely done the trick - and by winter when I'll need it for the veggie patch, they won't be needing it. That has been such a relief. The whingeing during the day is probably due to Apache being a bit under the weather, but that is being sorted now with medication. Apart from that she is a bit grumpy towards the chicks, but at least she has stopped pecking at them and it is 6 beaks in a circle. I hope the company will keep her happy while Sioux is in the nest box. Last night - OH didn't snore! Or I was too tired to hear him.

The citronella rags don't work - I put them around and there were flies happily buzzing around it! Arghhhhh! Just don't want to waste my red top, but the next time it is warm up it goes.

LaPoule - next time the cat won't budge, you may have to roll the car over it - I'm sure it will move in plenty of time to get you sweating first - they are just like that. Probably checks it's claws before sauntering to the side. But how irritating that it seems to work one way. I think perhaps your folks will have to get their own rooster or two - sounds like those fellows have serious "me" issues to go on as long as that.
