Chicken has swallowed a (toy) lizard

Recommended Posts

Last night my mad Ginger stole a small rubber lizard thing from my daughter (I think she dropped it). I heard L shouting and running around but by the time I got there the stupid chicken had swallowed it and L was sitting on the eglu crying.

I kind of hoped it would come back up again but nothing has happened and this morning Ginger is running around trying to grab anything that looks like food as normal.

From what L said this toy was about 3 inches long (but it may not be that long). Will a chicken be able to 'digest' a three-inch long piece of rubber? Is it likely to come out or will it just sit there? Is there anything I should be doing - would a vet be able to get it out or should I just wait and see what happens?

I hope it goes through the system OK - if it's large enough to swallow, maybe it'll come out the other end. My cat ate a huge rubber band that came out intact at the other end - along with string on another occasion, but they didn't have bits sticking out the side, but if the toy is relatively soft it might work. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. How about a dose of cod liver oil to help ease things through, it won't harm her and at least she'll have the best feathers in the flock - anyone else have ideas?

I don't think it will be able to go through her because everything that makes it as far down as the gizzard gets ground really small by flint grit. I don't reckon that the rubber will break up.

Maybe worth a visit to a friendly vet?

Thanks all. I am concerned about it staying in the crop and not going anywhere but I am sure what a vet would be able to do. She still seems fine.

If it does go through, how long do you think it would be before it appears?

(OH says it might come out in an egg  )

Yes Dr Choc had 'eats hair bands' on her sig didn't she?

Anyway, no sign of the lizard yet. I succomberd and let then out into their netted area yesterday so there is a chance it may be under the bushes somewhere.

Ginger is absolutely fine though.

(I am a little bit fascinated- if it does reappear will it come out in one piece or looking in some way deformed).
