Plum
Please can you give me your advice / thoughts. Sparrow has a piece of flesh hanging from her vent about 2-3 in long. Its not a prolapse but must be the membrane from her insides. She laid this morning and then this afternoon which is when I found it. Her bottom was very dirty, I have washed it all and dried her. I rang the vet and got an appointment for tomorrow. She's being having trouble laying for some time now either softies, huge ones, funny shapes or not at all for over a week and she's had courses of limestone flour and codliver oil and zolcal. Shes just had a few days laying normal eggs. Thanks
Budgies
Sorry to hear this Plum. I'm not sure what to suggest, apart from possibly to keep her calm and in the dark and separate, so that neither she nor the others peck at whatever it is that's hanging out of her. With a prolapse I know it's sometimes advised to push it back in, but this sounds a bit different. Sorry I can't be of more help, hopefully some of the more expert chicken keepers will be able to help. xx
peggotty
It sounds a bit like what was happening with one of my hens maybe? She layed softies, and it seemed like sometimes they ruptured as she was trying to lay them and so in the nest box I would find the yolk and albumen, while the fleshy soft shellskin was left hanging empty and partially stuck to something inside her vent? It did look like a tube of membrane. We were able to successfully remove this a couple of times, and buy her a little extra time. Hope it's good news for you and her. Plum
Thanks Budgies, I think it happened because she stands to strain when trying to lay an egg and the others peck at her vent. When I cleaned her up the fleathers are fluffy so its hidden so I popped her back with the others but I'll check on her in a minute I hadn't thought of her pecking herself. I think I'll get some purple spray tomorrow. Hopefully she won't try and lay again in the morning. Peggotty I thought that to begin with but when I pulled on it gently she squawked. It's pink near to her and dark the other end. It disappeared when I picked her up and turned her over but came back when she pooed so perhaps it is bowel lining. Egluntyne
Sounds as if she does need to see the ve, Plum. Sometimes the prolapse pops in and out. Maybe that is what is happening. I would keep her separate and in the dark until the appointment, with just water to drink until she has been seen. God luck.
Plum
Thanks Egluntine I'm taking her at 9. She's fine this morning no signs of blood where she has slept. I hope the vet can tidy it up and give her antibiotic cover.

Plum
Hi, back from vet. She didn't know what it was but ligatured it and removed it because it was necrotic. I reckon it was a polyp, it was about 1cm into egg laying bit. I bought some purple spray to sooth area and keep others off. She's her normal perky self. In the car going she was gaping, was that stress or should I worm her in case? Tip - don't put hemcore into your cat carrier unless you use your OH car
Budgies
Poor hen, glad she's feeling a bit perkier now. The gaping was probably heat - they pant like dogs do because they can't sweat. Was she holding her wings out too? I wouldn't worry about the panting, it's all quite stressful for the poor wee things! Hope she continues to do well!! Plum
That will be it then she was holding her wings out. Like an idiot I had the heating on for her. You know such a lot Budgies.
Budgies
Glad it was just the heat, Plum! Very kind of you to say so, but I've only learned a bit through observing my two girls whom I had for three years! There are some real experts on here who know WAY more than me, which is comforting!! peggotty
Glad to hear how you got on at the vet - although hens do seem to be creatures of mystery, don't they? I am wishing Sparrow a full recovery. And I second every word about Budgies.

Plum
Thanks you lot. She seems fine but am going to keep an eye on her rear end and have used the purple spray. It looks very good on me! So does anyone know anything about polyps in the ladies laying tackle? I need something else to worry about.
