Sugarcraft

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I was wondering if anyone has a particular interest/talent with sugarcraft. I am hoping to find a course or individual tuition in some of the basics and flower making.

Not sure if anyone can help. I'm in the West Country area. Failing that can anyone recommend some good books.

Thanks for reading :D

I used to do Sugarcraft and made Wedding Cakes.

There are plenty of groups affiliated to the British Guild of Sugarcraft which hold monthly meetings. Here is a link to their site http://www.bsguk.org/ - you might find a group near to you.

I just make the family cakes now......and you've just reminded me that I need to make my sister's for tomorrow.....I'm doing a 'Pimp That Snack' type, 8" Butterfly Cake - hardly sugarcraft

An excellent book to buy is anything by Alan Dunn, he is very clever and the instructions are very clear, he is an excellent sugar flower maker and all the girls on the BSG forums who have been to his courses (sadly I haven't had the chance yet) highly recommend him.

For general cake decorating techniques the first two international school of sugarcraft books are good and I also use books by Peggy Porschen, Mich Turner and May Clee-Cadman for ideas.

Another good idea is to look into your local college - I know that at Wiltshire College they run a sugarcraft course which is based in Melksham if you're close to me. They are generally reasonably priced.

Another option is to go into a cake decorator supplies shop and ask if they run courses or know someone who does. I know that at least two of my local shops run courses and so that should be a pretty good bet. HTH

I was asked to make my daughters wedding cake - 3 tier cake too!! - I managed to bake it and then bought books and made the sugar flowers (roses) and leaves to go on each of the tops and around the sides of the cake I stencilled musical notes from a stencil I bought as they both played in a brass band and met there with tartan ribbon the same as the grooms kilt round the bottom edges of the cake to the board. The making of the flowers was great fun and embarrassed to say never touched it again and gave away my stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
