Ygerna
We have a CHICK. How exciting is that? I am all goosebumpy (should that be chicken bumpy) with excitment. I wonder if the others will hatch ok. I really hope so. ETA: I've just had a quick peep, still just the one chick. He/she is a golden colour, and came from a pale beige/creamy egg. So, which do you think it is likely to be from the 6 breeds below? orpingtons, silkies, marans, leghorns, wandottes, aracanas, rhode island red, brahama, and naked neck ETA: Photos - Anyone like to hazard a guess now? Lewis
Well done! Not sure about the breed, a photo would help Its not a Naked Neck, they're obvious and so cute as chicks. Not a Silkie either, their eggs are white I think and they're silkie'esque as chicks. Brahmas have feathered legs aswell.
Ygerna
I am wondering if it might be an Orpington
Lewis
I am wondering if it might be an Orpington Could be The Orpington eggs we had at the farm were a darker egg colour, like 'shop bought eggs' - only a bit lighter

Ygerna
Can I ask those who have done this before a question please? I know the day that the eggs were set under the broody, and today was 'hatch' day, I also know that they wont all hatch at the same time, but, whats the longest gap I can expect, after which I shouldn't expect any more? (does that make sense at all? )
Lewis
I'd say give it another 3 days and that should be your lot. They sometimes do take a few extra days to hatch, and sometimes hatch a bit earlier

Phosphorus
I left mine 2 days and was advised to listen in case I could hear cheeping from the others - one did a day after first hatch but then nothing You can get a bowl of warm water (baby bottle temp) that is deep enough for them to float in. Put each egg in and let it settle - if there is a live chick in there the egg will begin to bob about - I would do that about 48 hours after first hatch. Also an egg with a chick in it will feel heavier.
Phosphorus
Also have you candled? A thought - I was told that if I wanted to add any new live chicks under my broody to go with my lone chick I had a cut off of about 48 hours. Probably not an issue here as so many eggs still to hatch, but thought I would mention it. (We actually got away with nearly 72 hours ). Funnily enough, I have just arranged to collect a day old Legbar this evening to do just this. I emailed hubby to tell him, not sure how he will take that news Also, I have found someone to take 'Sunshine' (DD named the chick already ) if she turns out to be a he, which is a happier arrangement than what I planned to do with him if he was indeed a he. Griffin
My Orps came from creamy coloured eggs, quite small infact. Orps might be massive but their eggs are not!
Ygerna
My Orps came from creamy coloured eggs, quite small infact. Orps might be massive but their eggs are not! I am very secretyly hoping she is A) a she and B) an Orp (well, not so secret now, ) I've got a photo to load but I cannot find the camera cable I do have yet another question for those who have done this before. How do you stop yourself from checking the little chicks every 5 minutes? I can't resist peeping about once an hour

atsw
I do have yet another question for those who have done this before. How do you stop yourself from checking the little chicks every 5 minutes? I can't resist peeping about once an hour I'd like to know the answer to that one as well . One of my two Orps went broody a couple of days ago, so I've sourced some fertile eggs for her to sit on. The hatchlings we looked after last week (while friends were away at Half-Term) were all incubated, so watching them was easy, but I've no idea how I (and certainly the kids ) are going to cope if the chicks are always hidden under 'Mum'. If all goes to plan, we should have some Light Sussex chicks by the end of June . Andrew
