Has anyone had any problems with Hemcore?

Sometimes I get a great bale that smells really nicely of citronella and is all clean pale chippings.

More often I get one that is grey and smells mouldy.

This evening I spread a whole new bale in my run, just to find it was full of something like cotton wool that got all wrapped around my chicken's toes. I spent ages picking it out by hand, but there is still loads in there.

Does anyone have more success with any of the alternative beddings, or are they all a bit hit and miss?

Hi

I think you have some old stock as I keep it sometimes through the winter in a barn and outside and it does go grey and can get mouldy (as anything would if it gets damp) but as I am using it in an open space for horses it has never been a problem. I just use it as my horse just stand in it.

The lemon is citronella for repelling flies. The hemcore packaging is more watertight than aubiose but all of the beddings are good these days spoilt for choice.

I understand Hemcore is bankrupt but today my local agricultural merchant has a trailer load of it (they are still getting it apparently)??

Good luck try something else..and def take it back its not right

I really think you need to take a sample back and ask for a replacement. Not for the fluff but the mould.

My girls get a bit of fibre around their toes if they have been out in the wet and mud then in the Hemcore. It took me a while to work out where it was coming from. It comes off easier if you wet their toes then pick it off. :D

I evaluated quite a few beddings a while back (there are some newer ones that I havent tried) but I preferred hemcore and the others just were no match, but it does have some fibres in some of the bags(hit and miss) still was gutted to hear they have gone out of business?? but not sure if its been taken over or not as I say our feed merchant had loads of it in their yard yesterday

take it back for a refund

I hadthe cotton wool thing in one of my bales recently, although it smelt fine and there were no signs of mould.

I only use hemcore in the summer brecause the citronella works so well. I prefer the texture, feel, and size of Aubiose, but spraying it myself every couple of days is a bit of a faff.

If one of my other bales has that in, i'll go back to my supplier and complain.
