New Chicken Possibilities? - thinking of a Coral.

Recommended Posts

We're looking for a chicken to replace Miso.

We'd like to stick with our poultry supplier as the chickens we've had have arrived pest free and are healthy. She doesn't do Redcos any more.

As we have a Bovans Nera and a Brown Nick and would like another hybrid we were wondering about a Coral - these are available. Would she be suitable to go with our two and are they alright in an eglu? What are their temperament and what colour eggs do they lay?

Ours are very laid back ('scuse the pun!) and we wouldn't like to upset the balance too much.

I have an Amber hen, I think they are the same thing, she is quite buxom and larger than my gingers (sort of light sussex shape but smaller) she is a nice hen, a bit bossy sometimes but easy to pick up etc..

Dolly lays pale brown bog standard eggs

Your new hen will need to be separate from the others for a while but within sight so they can get used to each other

Personaly, I wouldn't go for a coral. Today I went to collect my 4 beautiful girls [bluebell, 2 black rocks and a warren/isa brown]. I originally wanted a coral instead of2 black rocks.

But when we arrived the corals were running around like crazy and we asked about them and she said they were a very scatty breed. We tried to catch one for half an hour but no luck. Although they lay many eggs they aren't very friendly, - the lady had around 20 corals and all were same -

Im new to chickens so I don't really know but thats my opinion

The amber is different from the coral. They are not quite as docile as the amber and the warrens, but they are nowhere near as scatty as the whitestar! Mine is lovely - is the best layer by far, big pale cream eggs regular as clockwork. Slightly more timid, but very quick to crouch for me and be caught for a cuddle. :D They look halfway between the amber and whitestars - slimline shape, but don't have the typical upright fan tail of the whitestar, or such big combs. I'd say go for it. 8)
